Giants agree to two-year contract with LHP Sean Manaea

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Giants and left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea agreed to terms on a two-year Major League contract worth $25 million, which includes an opt-out following the 2023 season. Manaea will make $7.5 million in 2023 and $12.5 million in 2024. In addition, Manaea will receive a $5 million signing bonus. He will also make an annual donation of $62,500 to the Giants Community Fund in both 2023 and 2024.

Manaea, 30, spent 2022 with San Diego where he went 8-9 with a 4.96 ERA in 30 games, 28 starts, in his first and only season with the Padres. He averaged nearly a strikeout per inning (8.9 K/9ip), fanning 156 batters in 158.0 innings. Left-handed batters hit .187 off the southpaw last year with a .600 OPS.

In 2021, the Indiana native posted career highs in innings pitched (179.1), starts (32) and strikeouts (194) while going 11-10 with a 3.91 ERA for the A’s. Among the American League leaders, Manaea was eighth in innings pitched, ninth in opponent’s OPS (.719) and on-base percentage (.304) and 10th in ERA, opponent’s slugging (.415) and batting average against (128 starts) and 641 strikeouts. Manaea threw the 12th no-hitter in A’s history when he no-hit the Boston Red Sox on April 21, 2018.

Over seven Major League seasons with Oakland and San Diego, Manaea is 58-50 with a 4.06 ERA in 159 games (156 starts) and 797 strikeouts in 885.0 innings. He was originally a Competitive Balance Round A selection (34th overall pick in the draft) by the Kansas City Royals in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Indiana State University.
