Race start: 14:00 local time (Mexico City) / 20:00 GMT / 3:00 p.m. ET / 8:00 p.m. BST
Venue: Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Mexico City, Mexico
Round 19 of 23 in the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship
Race distance: 71 laps (305.354 km / 189.738 miles)

This is a high-stakes weekend. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli leads the Drivers’ Championship by 123 points over teammate George Russell and can clinch the title (and become the youngest World Champion in F1 history at age 20) with a finish of ninth or higher. Mercedes also hold a strong Constructors’ lead.

Track Details

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is a 4.304 km (2.674-mile) permanent road course located in Mexico City at approximately 2,200–2,285 metres above sea level—the highest circuit on the F1 calendar. The thin air reduces aerodynamic downforce and engine power output while stressing cooling systems, forcing teams to run higher downforce setups than the altitude alone might suggest.

Layout: 17 turns, clockwise direction.

Key features: Extremely long main straight (over 1 km from the exit of the final corner to Turn 1 braking, one of the longest on the calendar), allowing very high top speeds (often exceeding 340–350+ km/h despite high downforce).

Sectors:

Sector 1 – Long straight into the tight Moisés Solana Esses (Turns 1-3: right-left-right).

Sector 2 – Medium/high-speed flowing section including the Esses (Turns 7-11) and other technical corners.

Sector 3 – Slow, tight stadium section (Foro Sol / Estadio GNP Seguros, Turns 13-16) that snakes through the old baseball stadium, followed by the remnant of the historic Peraltada (Turn 17, slightly banked).

Overtaking: Strong opportunities into Turn 1 and other heavy braking zones, aided by DRS/Straight Mode zones on the long straights. Safety Car probability has historically been around 60% in recent years.

Surface note: Significant portions of the track (including sections between Turns 16-1 and 7-16) have been resurfaced for 2026, which may affect grip and tyre behaviour.

Lap record: 1:17.774 (Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes, 2021).Weather ConditionsLargely dry and mild conditions are forecast.

Air temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s °C (peaking around 25–27°C / mid-70s to low-80s °F).

Low chance of rain (near zero on Sunday; possible light risk earlier in the weekend).

Light to moderate winds.

Track temperatures could rise significantly under clear skies. Expect dry running and a focus on tyre management and cooling rather than wet-weather strategy.

Recent Driver Forms & Championship Context

Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) – Dominant 2026 season with nine wins. Fresh off a commanding victory in the United States Grand Prix. Needs minimal points to seal the title.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – Five-time winner at this circuit (most successful driver here). Strong late-season form and historically excellent at the high-altitude track.

George Russell (Mercedes) – Second in the standings; consistent but has been overshadowed by his teammate.

Charles Leclerc & Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) – Recent strong results; Ferrari has closed the gap in some sessions.

Lando Norris (McLaren) – 2025 Mexico winner; looking to bounce back. Other notables include Isack Hadjar, Oscar Piastri, and local interest around Sergio Pérez (Cadillac, marking his 300th Grand Prix start).

Key Driver Matchups

Antonelli vs. Verstappen: Title favorite against the circuit specialist. Verstappen’s experience and Red Bull’s altitude performance make him the main threat for the win.

Mercedes internal battle: Antonelli vs. Russell – both in title contention mathematically, though the gap is large.

Ferrari resurgence: Leclerc and Hamilton challenging for podiums against the Mercedes and Red Bulls.

Stadium section battles and long-straight DRS fights will decide many positions; braking stability into Turn 1 is critical.

Race History

The Mexican Grand Prix has been held in three eras (1963–1970, 1986–1992, 2015–present). Max Verstappen is the most successful modern driver with five wins (2017, 2018, 2021–2023). Other recent winners include Lando Norris (2025), Carlos Sainz (2024), and Lewis Hamilton (2016, 2019). The circuit’s unique altitude and passionate fans create a distinctive atmosphere, with the stadium section producing memorable moments.

Outlook

A potentially historic weekend if Antonelli seals the championship. Expect high speeds on the straights, technical challenges in the thin air, and intense racing through the stadium. Verstappen remains the man to beat for the race win on pure circuit form, while Antonelli focuses on a solid points finish to claim the title. Monitor practice for setup insights given the new asphalt and altitude demands.
