Cubs reduce spring roster to 41 players

MESA – The Chicago Cubs reduced the number of players on their spring roster from 51 to 41 today.

Nelson Velázquez, an outfielder, has been assigned to Triple-A Iowa.

Minor league camp has been assigned to nine non-roster invitees: Nick Burdi, Manuel Rodriguez, and Cam Sanders, all right-handed pitchers; Brendon Little, a left-handed pitcher; quarterback Dom Nuez; Matt Mervis, David Bote, and Sergio Alcántara, all infielders; and Ben DeLuzio, an outfielder.

Twenty-four pitchers, six of whom are non-roster invitees and two are on the 60-day injured list, three catchers, eight infielders, four outfielders, and two infielder/outfielders make up Chicago’s spring roster of 41 players.
