Cubs recall C Miguel Amaya from Double-A Tennessee, designate LHP Ryan Borucki for assignment

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Chicago Cubs today recalled catcher Miguel Amaya from Double-A Tennessee and designated left-handed pitcher Ryan Borucki for assignment.

Amaya, 24, will wear uniform number six and looks to make his major league debut in tonight’s 7:05 p.m. ET game against Washington at Nationals Park.

The right-handed hitting Amaya has batted .273 (12-for-44) with five doubles, four home runs, eight RBI and one stolen base in 13 games with Tennessee this season.  His .659 slugging percentage ranks second in the Southern League and fifth in Double-A, while his 1.070 OPS ranks third in the Southern League and ninth among all Double-A hitters.

In parts of seven seasons in the Cubs farm system, Amaya has recorded a .244 batting average (353-for-1,448) with 86 doubles, four triples, 38 home runs, 186 walks and 201 RBI in 407 games starting with the Cubs Dominican Summer League team in 2016. He was selected to both the 2018 and 2019 MLB Futures Games and reached Double-A for the first time in 2021.

Amaya missed time in 2021 due to a right forearm strain suffered in June before he underwent Tommy John surgery that offseason. He returned to the field in July of 2022 and went on to bat .278 (27-for-97) with six doubles, one triple, four home runs, 19 RBI and a .379 on-base percentage with Tennessee.

A native of Chitre, Panama, the six-foot tall Amaya was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2015.  In 2019, he was ranked by MLB.com as the Cubs top prospect and the No. 7 catching prospect in major league baseball. He remained in the Cubs top-five prospect rankings through 2021.

Borucki, 29, is 10-9 with 13 holds and a 4.45 ERA (84 ER/170.0 IP) in 96 career games (19 starts) between the Blue Jays (2018-22) and Mariners (2022). He was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, April 30, but did not make an appearance.
