CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today added infielder Jeimer Candelario to the 26-man roster in advance of tonight’s 7:05 p.m. CT game against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field. In a corresponding move, infielder Trey Mancini has been designated for assignment.
Candelario, 29, was acquired along with a cash consideration yesterday from Washington for minor league left-handed pitcher DJ Herz and minor league infielder Kevin Made.
The switch-hitting Candelario, who will wear uniform No. 9, hit .258 (95-for-368) with 57 runs, 30 doubles, two triples, 16 home runs, 53 RBI and an .823 OPS in 99 games with Washington this season. At the time of the trade, he ranked third in the N.L. in doubles and tied for sixth with 48 extra-base hits while his 3.1 fWAR led N.L. third basemen.
Candelario returns to the Cubs organization after he was signed by Chicago as a non-drafted free agent in October of 2010, making his major league debut in five games with Chicago in 2016. He was traded to Detroit with infielder Isaac Paredes in a deal for catcher Alex Avila and pitcher Justin Wilson at the 2017 trade deadline.
Mancini, 31, hit .234 (55-for-235) with 12 doubles, four home runs and 28 RBI in 79 games for Chicago, his first season with the Cubs.
