New York, NY – New York City FC proudly announced the transfer of defender Christian McFarlane to English Premier League champions Manchester City. As part of the deal, New York City FC will receive a percentage of the transfer fee if McFarlane is sold in the future.

McFarlane, 18, originally from the United Kingdom, is the first Homegrown player from New York City FC to progress through the entire development pipeline and join a Premier League team. He joined the NYCFC academy at the age of 11 in 2018 and advanced through every age category, eventually making his first team debut in 2024 via Major League Soccer (MLS) NEXT Pro.

“We are incredibly proud to see Christian reach this milestone in his career,” said Sporting Director David Lee. “He’s come through our academy system, continued his development with NYCFC II in MLS NEXT Pro, and earned his place in our first team. For Christian to now have the opportunity to continue his journey at Manchester City, a club at the pinnacle of world football, is a testament to his hard work, talent, and dedication. I can’t wait to follow his career in Manchester, knowing he’ll give everything to reach the highest level.”

Lee added, “Christian showed elite potential early on and signed his first professional contract before turning 15. This speaks to the trust and commitment we had in each other and the belief in our development pathway. The hard work of the academy staff to help Christian succeed is enormous. This moment underscores our responsibility to identify talent and provide pathways for young players to achieve their maximum potential within our system.”

McFarlane’s rapid progress with New York City FC is evident. At 14 years and 234 days old, he became the club’s sixth Homegrown signing in 2021, the third-youngest in MLS history at that time. In 2024, he made his first team debut, making 13 appearances in MLS and Leagues Cup games, starting in nine matches, and earning a spot on MLS’s 22 Under 22 list. During his time with NYCFC II, he recorded 33 appearances across all competitions.

“Representing NYCFC on a global stage is an incredible honor,” McFarlane said. “The club has provided me with amazing opportunities and invaluable lessons. I’m excited for the next chapter with Manchester City. Visiting their facilities and seeing the players is a dream come true. I know this move will be pivotal for my development, and I’m ready to embrace the challenge and make the most of this opportunity.”

McFarlane follows in the footsteps of NYCFC Homegrown players like Joe Scally, James Sands, and Andres Jasson, who have played in top European divisions.

“I want to thank David Lee, Sam Pugsley, and everyone at the club for advocating for me. Their support has meant so much. Joining Manchester City is a huge step, and I’m grateful to be part of the City Football Group. This shows young players that with the right mindset and hard work, opportunities like this are possible. It’s a dream come true, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”

McFarlane began his soccer journey at JIGS Soccer Training School in Long Island, New York, before joining NYCFC’s academy. He has represented England’s U-16 and U-17 youth national teams and was part of the England squad for the 2024 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.
