CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs have officially recalled left-handed pitcher Tom Cosgrove to the major league roster. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Ethan Roberts has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Cosgrove will sport uniform number 38.

Cosgrove, 28, was acquired by the Cubs on April 10 in exchange for cash considerations. Since joining the Triple-A Iowa squad, he has delivered three scoreless appearances spanning 4.0 innings. During this stretch, Cosgrove struck out seven while allowing just one walk, recording a 1.00 WHIP and an impressive 15.75 strikeouts per nine innings. Before his move to the Cubs organization, Cosgrove pitched for Triple-A El Paso (San Diego), where he posted a 7.36 ERA (3 ER/3.2 IP) across four games, registering two strikeouts.

In his major league career, Cosgrove holds a 1-3 record with one save, a 3.95 ERA (29 ER/66.0 IP), and 59 strikeouts across 72 appearances—all with the San Diego Padres. Opponents have hit .221 against him in those outings. A Staten Island, N.Y., native, Cosgrove was selected by the Padres in the 12th round of the 2017 MLB Draft and made his MLB debut on April 29, 2023.

Roberts, 27, has made nine relief appearances for the Cubs this season since being recalled on April 9, compiling a 1-0 record with a 5.40 ERA (5 ER/8.1 IP) and a 1.20 WHIP. His season began impressively, maintaining a 1.42 ERA (1 ER/6.1 IP) over his first few outings. However, in his most recent appearance, he allowed four earned runs over two innings.

The Cubs take on the Philadelphia Phillies tonight at 6:00 p.m. CT at Wrigley Field. The game will be broadcast on ESPN, with radio coverage available on 670 The Score and WRTO 1200 AM (Spanish).
