CFB-FBS: Mid-American Conference Week 12 Release and Previews

WEEK 12 GAME SCHEDULE

Tuesday November 12, 2024

Ball State Cardinals vs Buffalo Bulls

INSIDE THE SERIES: BUFFALO

• Ball State has not traveled to Buffalo since 2016, and the Cardinals have played on the Bulls’ home grounds just five times in the 55-year history of the series. • Ball State has dominated the series, 11-2, and never lost at UB, as the Cardinals boast a 5-0 record in western New York. The red and white’s perfect road record against Buffalo is its only unblemished road mark against a Mid-American Conference member. • Five of the last six meetings have ended in a Ball State win, with the 2020 MAC Championship Game headlining that stretch. The Cardinals defeated the 23rd-ranked Bulls to secure the program’s sixth and most recent MAC crown. • The Cardinals and Bulls have squared off twice before in midweek MACtion games. Ball State triumphed in the most recent affair, capturing a 20-3 Tuesday-night win over UB in 2021.

Ball State Cardinals Notes

CARDINALS CONTINUE MAC-TION PLAY TUESDAY WITH FIRST TRIP TO BUFFALO SINCE 2016

• Ball State prepares for yet another tight Mid-American Conference matchup next Tuesday when the Cardinals visit Buffalo for the first time since 2016. The Cardinals, 2-3 in the MAC, have played to a difference of six points or less in all five MAC games, and in eight of their past nine MAC games dating to last year. • The Cardinals fell 27-21 on election night to Miami, allowing a pair of Redhawks field goals in the fourth quarter after knotting the score in the third. Ball State drove to the Miami 34-yard line on its final possession but turned the ball over on downs with 54 seconds left. • Besides a pair of Jackson Courville field goals, the Cardinals scored on a pair of big-play touchdowns. Senior linebacker Brandon Berger scored Ball State’s first defensive TD of the season with an interception return on a Miami punt attempt that went awry. After Miami’s punt snap was fumbled, the punter attempted a pass that fell into Berger’s arms and he rambled 46 yards for the score and a 7-0 lead. Ball State tied the score 21-21 in the third period when Kadin Semonza found Justin Bowick for a 55-yard score down the left sideline. Cam Pickett ran into the endzone for a two-point conversion. • Bowick had eight catches for 171 yards and the best receiving day for Cardinal’s receiver since Riley Miller’s 208-yard performance against Kent State in 2018. His eight catches were a career high, and he finished six yards shy of his career high, 177, while at Eastern Illinois. • Tanner Koziol caught four first-half passes to establish a new Ball State single-season mark (68) for receptions by a tight end. He enters the Buffalo game 22 catches shy of breaking the Cardinals’ career mark for receptions by a tight end (158 by Darius Hill, 2005-08). Koziol’s 629 yards this year are fifth by a Ball State TE, 41 yards shy of Hill’s 670 in 2008 which are third on the list. Like Koziol’s distinction last week, Hill was Ball State’s only other national semifinalist for the Mackey Award honoring the nation’s most outstanding tight end. • The 100th anniversary of Ball State’s first season in 1924 coincides with the 100th season on the field, given that the Cardinals didn’t field a team in 1943 due to World War II. Season long celebrations of the 100th season will be displayed at Scheumann Stadium this season. Similarly, it is the program’s 50th season in the MAC — formally joining the league in 1973 and playing its first football games in 1975.

WHAT A WIN MEANS:

• Ball State will move back to .500 in the MAC and win for the 12th time in 14 meetings with the Bulls. • Currently ted with Dwight Wallace for fourth in Ball State football history with 40 career victories, Mike Neu will stand alone as the Cardinals’ fourth-winningest head coach.

IN THE MAC: EVERY GAME BY 6 POINTS OR LESS

• All five Ball State games in the MAC this year have been decided by six points or less. Last Saturday’s 27-21 defeat to Miami was the first decided by more than three points. Five straight MAC games is Ball State’s longest streak since it entered the MAC in 1975. • In fact, eight of Ball State’s past nine games in the MAC (last 3 of 4 in 2023) have been decided by six points or less. Nine of the last 10 have been decided by seven or less (last 4 of 5 in 2023). • No Ball State season has ever had more than five games decided by six points or less. • This is the fourth time, and the first since 2011, that Ball State has had five games decided by six points or less: 1991, 2009, 2011 and 2024.

ONE FUMBLE LOST

• Ball State is one of just 15 schools to have lost only one fumble or less this season. Only one school — Louisiana — has not lost a single fumble. The Cardinals join 14 FBS programs who have lost just one.

GETTING DEFENSIVE

• After allowing 46.0 points per game over its first six games this season, Ball State has allowed only 24.7 over its past three outings against Vanderbilt, Northern Illinois and Miami (Ohio). v Ball State owned a 4-0 takeaway margin in its win over Northern Illinois, and it got its first defensive score of the year on Brandon Berger’s 46-yard interception return against Miami (Ohio).

SAME TREND? LAST YEAR’S SIX TOUGH WEEKS OF MAC DEFENSE

8 The Cardinals allowed an average of 15.2 points over their last six games last season, finishing within one score in losses to MAC Championship Game foes Toledo (lost 13-6) and Miami (lost 17-15). 8 Ball State finished 2023 with a 3-3 mark over its last six games — its only other loss coming in a 24-21 road defeat at Bowling Green. 8 After allowing 40+ points through its first four losses, Ball State allowed a total of 91 over its last six games. 8 Ball State limited five opponents to less than 100 yards rushing last season: Georgia (99), Eastern Michigan (61), Central Michigan (99), Kent State (29) and Miami (46).

CARDINALS COMFORTABLE IN THE RED ZONE

• Ball State has scored on 23 of 25 visits inside the Red Zone this season – including 21 in a row. The Cardinals (92.0%) rank 20th in the Red Zone among all FBS teams, scoring 16 touchdowns and seven field goals. • The Cardinals’ first “miss” inside the opponents’ 20-yard line was on the season’s second possession against Missouri State. Ball State reached the Bears’ 20 on a second-down run by Braedon Sloan. Kadin Semonza was sacked on third down and Jackson Courville missed a 38-yard field goal on the next play. • In a homecoming win over NIU, a late interception set up a scoring opportunity inside the Huskies’ 20-yard line but Courville’s 33-yard field goal attempt was blocked, thus ending a streak of 21 straight scoring attempts inside the Red Zone.

Buffalo Bulls Notes

STORYLINES

• UB head coach Pete Lembo served as Ball State’s head coach from 2011-15. He had a 33-29 record at Ball State and took the Cardinals to two bowl games. He faced the Bulls once as head coach at Ball State, a 28-25 Cardinal victory in 2011. • This is a rare trip to Buffalo for Ball State. Since the Bulls joined the MAC in 1999, this is just the fifth time the Cardinals will play at UB Stadium. Ball State won the last four meetings, including the most recent in 2016. • Buffalo has played in three MAC Championships games. Ball State was their opponent in two of them. The Bulls defeated the Cardinals in 2008, with Ball State returning the favor in 2020. • After averaging 125 yards passing over the first six games, quarterback C.J. Ogbonna has averaged 259 passing yards over the last three games, including a career-best 309 yards against Western Michigan. • Linebackers Shaun Dolac (120) and Red Murdock (107) rank first and third in the nation in tackles, respectively. • Running back Al-Jay Henderson is averaging 107 yards rushing over the last four games. He is averaging 6.9 yards per carry over the same four-game span. He has gone over 100 yards of total offense in each of the last four games. • Shaun Dolac (343) is two tackles shy of passing Lee Skinner (344) for seventh place in program history in career tackles. • A win would make the Bulls bowl eligible for the eighth time in program history and the first time since 2022.

Bulls Begin #MACtion Play against Ball State on Tuesday Night

The University at Buffalo football team will play their first #MACtion game of the season when they host Ball State on Tuesday night. Buffalo is 5-4 overall, 3-2 in MAC play and is coming off a 41-30 win at Akron on Nov. 12. Quarterback C.J. Ogbonna led the Bulls with 210 yards passing and two touchdowns and 63 yards rushing and a score. Ball State is 3-6 overall, 2-3 in the MAC and is coming off a 27-21 loss to Miami (OH) last Saturday. The Cardinals are led by quarterback Kadin Semonza who has thrown for 2,029 yards and 16 touchdowns this season. Ball State leads the all-time series, 11- 2. The Cardinals won the last meeting, 20-3, at Ball State in 2021.

Looking to Become Bowl Eligible

The Bulls are looking to become bowl eligible for the eighth time in program history. The Bulls have gone to six bowl games in their history, most recently winning the 2022 Camellia Bowl. Buffalo’s bowl history includes 2008 International Bowl (L, UConn), 2013 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (L, San Diego State), 2018 Dollar General Bowl (L, Troy), 2019 Bahamas Bowl (W, Charlotte), 2020 Camellia Bowl (W, Marshall) and 2022 Camellia Bowl (W, Georgia Southern).

Turnover Margin of Victory

The Bulls forced a season-high four turnovers in their win at Akron (three fumbles/interception). Buffalo is 5-0 on the season when it wins the turnover battle. UB is a +6 on the year in turnover margin to rank third in the MAC. Red Murdock has played a big role in turnovers as he leads the MAC and ranks second in the nation with four forced fumbles on the year. He is two shy of the single-season program record for forced fumbles in a season. He has eight career forced fumbles to rank third in program history. The record is 16 held by Khalil Mack which is also the NCAA record for career forced fumbles.

Central Michigan Chippewas vs Toledo Rockets

Toledo, which has won 12 of the last 14, has won seven-straight against CMU in Toledo dating back to 2008. • McElwain is in search of his third bowl appearance in the last five full years at Central Michigan (2019 New Mexico Bowl and 2021 Sun Bowl).

GAME NOTES

THE ESSENTIALS

Central Michigan (3-6, 1-4 MAC) plays its second #MACtion weeknight game when it travels to Toledo (6-3, 3-2 MAC) for a Tuesday game at the Glass Bowl. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU. CMU must win all three of its remaining games to gain a bowl berth.

ABOUT THE CHIPPEWAS

Central Michigan (3-6, 1-4 MAC) plays its second #MACtion weeknight game when it travels to Toledo (6-3, 3-2 MAC) for the sixth league contest for both teams on Tuesday evening. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET at Kelly/Shorts Stadium for an ESPNU nationally televised game. Three games remain for Central Michigan. The Chippewas must go 3-0 to become bowl eligible: at Toledo (Nov. 12), vs. Western Michigan (Nov. 19), and at Northern Illinois (Nov. 30). One loss will eliminate CMU from bowl contention. Central Michigan enters Tuesday’s contest at Toledo on a four-game losing skid after dropping four straight MAC contests. Those games include a 27-25 home loss to Ohio, a 38-34 road loss at Eastern Michigan, a 46-7 loss at Miami (OH), and a 23-13 home loss to Bowling Green. The Ohio and Eastern Michigan games were decided in the last minute.

A WIN OVER TOLEDO WOULD…

• Improve CMU’s record to 2-4 in MAC play. • Give CMU a 4-6 overall record start and put CMU in a position to win its final two games to become bowl eligible. • Snap a four-game losing streak. • Snap an eight-game road losing streak.

ROAD GAME WOES

Central Michigan will enter its upcoming contest at Toledo on an eight-game road losing streak. CMU’s last road victory was a 34-30 win at South Alabama on Sept. 23, 2023. Five of those losses were to MAC teams. The last time CMU won a MAC road game was at Northern Illinois on Nov. 2, 2022 (35-22). The eight-game streak ranks tied for the fifth longest in school history. Here is a list of the longest road losing streaks in school history.

Toledo Rockets Notes

Toledo enters its game vs. Central Michigan at the Glass Bowl on Tuesday, Nov. 12 (7:00 p.m./ESPNU) still in contention for a spot in the Mid-American Conference Championship Game. But Head Coach Jason Candle’s crew has a very thin margin of error. Toledo (6-3, 3-2 MAC) is coming off a heart-pounding 29-28 victory at Eastern Michigan on Nov. 2. The Rockets currently sit in a tie with Buffalo for fifth place in the MAC, one game behind four teams that are tied for first, with three games remaining. A loss in any of the last three contests could prove fatal to the Rockets’ chances of playing in the MAC title game for the third consecutive season. Tucker Gleason threw for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and Avery Smith broke up a two-point conversion attempt on the game’s final play to lift Toledo past EMU. Toledo took a 29-22 lead with 1:56 remaining on Thomas Sziros’ 25-yard touchdown reception on a 4th-and-1 play. After both teams traded three-and-outs, the Eagles went 82 yards in the final minute and scored on a 36-yard Hail Mary to Terry Lockett with no time remaining. Smith then broke up the Eagles’ two-point conversion attempt in the end zone to give the Rockets the victory. Central Michigan (3-6, 1-4 MAC) is coming off a 23-13 home-field loss to Bowling Green on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The Chippewas started the season 3-2 but have lost four straight games since then.

Rocket Launches

• With its win over Eastern Michigan, Toledo is bowl-eligible for the 15th consecutive season. • With a win over CMU, Toledo can clinch a winning record. Toledo has a string of 14 consecutive seasons without a losing record, the fifth-longest streak in the FBS. • Toledo leads the MAC in passing offense (261.3) and is third in passing efficiency (142.89). • Tucker Gleason leads the MAC in passing yards (237.0) and is second in total offense (262.3). • Jerjuan Newton is tied for second in the country with 10 TD receptions, trailing only San Jose State’s Nick Nash (12). Newton is Toledo’s career touchdowns reception leader with 31. • Toledo leads the MAC in attendance with an average of 24,977 through four home games. • Jason Candle (71-38) needs three more wins to pass Gary Pinkel (73-37-3 from 1991-2000) as Toledo’s all-time leader.

Western Michigan Broncos vs Bowling Green Falcons

THE SERIES

Tuesday is the 58th all-time meeting between the Broncos and the Falcons. BGSU leads the series at 34-20-3. Bowling Green has taken the last two meetings, with a 13-9 win in 2022 and a 34-10 win in Kalamazoo last season.

They are 1-6 when they don’t and 1-1 when the turnovers are even.

Western Michigan Broncos Notes

SCOUTING THE FALCONS

Bowling Green has won its last three games and four of its last five heading into Tuesday. Like the Broncos, the Falcons are one of four teams with a 4-1 record in the MAC. BGSU’s offense is averaging 26.7 points per game, with the attack led by senior quarterback Connor Bazelak. Bazelak has 68.2 completion percentage, has thrown for 2,022 yards and 11 touchdowns. Bazelak’s favorite target is junior Harold Fannin Jr., the top tight end in the nation. Fannin Jr’s 73 receptions is the most by any tight end in the nation and second overall among all receivers. He has 1,033 yards and six touchdown catches. The Falcons also have a strong running game, led by Terion Stewart. Stewart has rushed for 674 yards on the season, averaging 5.3 yards per carry and five touchdowns. Stewart recently eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the third time this seasons in BGSU’s most recent win at Central Michigan. The Falcons are second in the MAC in third down conversion defense, with opponents picking up first downs just 32.8 percent of the time. The team also has the third-best scoring defense in the conference, giving up just 21.0 points per game. BGSU boasts the second-best passing defense, allowing 168.3 yards per game. Linebacker Joseph Sipp Jr. leads the team with 59 total tackles, with 8.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. Sipp Jr. is one of three players that have at least four sacks on the BGSU defense. Cornerback Jordan Oladokun has five passes defended and two interceptions, including a pick six.

TURNOVER TROUBLE

Western Michigan turned the ball over three times in its loss to Northern Illinois. The total was a season-high. Prior to that the Broncos had turned it over more than once since the opening game of the season at Wisconsin. WMU also had not turned it over more than twice since Sept. 23, 2023 in a loss at Toledo.

ON 16, GOING ON 17

With three games left on the regular season schedule, Jaden Nixon has a chance to be the 17th running back in program history to rush for over 1,000 yards. Nixon just needs 153 yards to reach the mark and join teammate Jalen Buckley in the WMU history books. Buckley rushed for 1,003 yards last season, reaching the 1,000-yard mark in the final game of the season…. against Bowling Green.

Bowling Green Falcons Notes

MACTION RETURNS TO DOYT PERRY STADIUM

• Bowling Green State University hosts the Western Michigan Broncos on Tuesday night in a battle for first place in the MAC. Both teams are tied for the top spot in the standings with Miami (OH) and Ohio.

BOWLING GREEN VS. WMU

• Bowling Green and Western Michigan are meeting for the third consecutive year and ninth time over the last 19 seasons. • Bowling Green has lost six of its last nine games to WMU, dating back to 2005. All three wins during that span came during mid-week MACtion games (2015, 2022, 2023). • Tuesday marks the 58th all-time meeting between Bowling Green and Western Michigan in a series that began in 1954.

FIVE TOP STORYLINES

• A win Tuesday for the Falcons would extend their winning streak to four games. It would be BG’s second four-game winning streak (2023) since a seven-game streak from Sept. 26 to Nov. 11, 2015. • TE Harold Fannin Jr. leads all tight ends nationally in receptions (73), receiving yards (1,033), yards after catch (585), first downs (49), and broken tackles (24). He’s also tied for first in receiving touchdowns (6). According to Pro Football Focus, Fannin has the nation’s highest overall grade (96.0) and ranks No. 1 in pass routes grade (96.3) among all receivers. He’s also ranked No. 4 in receptions, No. 3 in receiving yards, No. 2 broken tackles, No. 2 in first downs and No. 1 in yards after catch. • Fannin is only the 16th tight end in FBS history to reach 1,000 receiving yards in a season. He needs 126 more receiving yards to become the 33rd FBS tight end with 2,000+ career receiving yards, and three receptions to break the BGSU career tight end receptions record. • QB Connor Bazelak has passed for 2,022 yards this season. This marks his fourth career season with 2,000+ passing yards, tying him for No. 3 all-time in FBS history. He fell just 65 yards short of 2,000 in 2023; reaching it would have tied Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel for the FBS record with five 2,000+ yard seasons. Bazelak needs just 43 passing yards to become the 16th Falcon with 4,000 yards while wearing the Orange and Brown. • RB Terion Stewart broke 14 tackles and averaged 6.35 yards after contact in his last outing at Central Michigan. He finished with 117 rushing yards and is now tied with P.J. Pope for No. 9 in program history with nine career games of 100+ rushing yards.

NIU opponents are converting just 25.2 percent on third down, the second lowest rate in the FBS behind only Tennessee’s 24.3 mark. • Santana Banner, Jaden Dolphin and Nate Valcarcel recorded interceptions at Western Michigan, NIU’s first three-interception game since the 2023 win over Ohio. Banner’s INT – off a fake punt attempt – was the first of his career; Dolphin recorded his second career INT, while Valcarcel leads NIU with two on the year. • NIU has held 17 of its last 22 opponents over the last two seasons to 25 points or less, including eight of its nine 2024 foes. Western Michigan became the first 2024 opponent to breach the 25-point barrier last week. • The Huskies held MAC leading rusher Jaden Nixon to 95 yards on 12 carries, with just 29 yards on 11 carries minus an early 66-yard touchdown run. NIU has not allowed a 100-yard rusher in its last 13 games, dating back to the 2023 game at Central Michigan. • Running back Antario Brown became the ninth 3,000-yard rusher in school history and the first since Jordan Lynch (2009-13) on a 34-yard touchdown run at Ball State. Brown is the first Huskie running back to join the 3,000-yard club since NIU all-time leader Garrett Wolfe (2004-06). • Since the start of the 2016 season, NIU leads the FBS in one-score games played with 60, including five in 2024. NIU is 28-32 in those games.

THE LAST MEETING:

The Huskie offense used explosive plays to score 55 points, led by Antario Brown’s four touchdown runs of 45-plus yards, while the NIU defense held Akron to 253 yards, 107 rushing, in a dominating 55-14 win at Akron in the last game between these teams on Oct. 7, 2023. Brown gained 280 of NIU’s 380 rushing yards on the day, Gavin Williams had a pair of short TD runs set up by Trayvon Rudolph long plays and Rocky Lombardi completed touchdown passes of 64 and 34 yards. Tied 7-7 after one quarter, the Huskies scored the next six touchdowns to break the game open as NIU cruised to the 41 point road win.

LAST TIME OUT:

NIU turned a season-best three interceptions into touchdowns, Cam Thompson scored on a 91-yard kickoff return and the Huskies used a 21-point third quarter outburst to earn a 42-28 Mid-American Conference win over Western Michigan Wednesday night in Kalamazoo. Running backs Gavin Williams and Telly Johnson Jr. each scored twice as the Huskies handed the Broncos their first league loss as Johnson finished with 141 yards on 23 carries.

HUSKIES IN THE MAC:

In 38 seasons as a member of the Mid-American Conference, the Huskies are 167-121-2 all-time. The Huskies own a winning percentage of .634 (137-79) versus MAC foes since re-joining the league in 1997. Since 2010, NIU is 80-35 (.696) against the MAC with three undefeated campaigns, two one-loss seasons and eight division championships, including a run of six-straight (2010- 15). NIU originally competed in the MAC from 1975-85.

HOME SWEET HOME:

NIU has won nearly 70 percent of its games played in Huskie Stadium since 2003 with an 83-39 (.680) record at home in 21-plus seasons. During that stretch, the Huskies have had 15 winning records at home and five undefeated seasons in DeKalb (2003, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013). NIU’s all-time record at Huskie Stadium is 185-119-2 for a .608 all-time winning percentage.

AT HOME IN THE MAC:

In 38 seasons of MAC play dating back to 1975, NIU is 89-55-1 (.617) all-time at home in league games, including a 71-35 (.670) mark in Huskie Stadium versus league opponents since rejoining the league in 1997. In 55 MAC home games since 2009, the Huskies are 43-18 (.705).

CLOSE CALLS:

Five of NIU’s nine games this season have been decided by one score or less with three determined by three points or fewer. Eight of NIU’s 13 games a year ago, including the Camellia Bowl win, were within that margin, a trend at NIU that predates Thomas Hammock’s tenure as head coach. Since the start of the 2016 season, NIU’s 60 one-score games played leads all FBS teams, with Texas and Eastern Michigan’s 55 a distant second.

IN OT:

IU is 10-6 in overtime games following the Huskies’ 23-20 OT loss to Buffalo on September 21. NIU has now played an overtime game in four consecutive seasons. Prior to the Buffalo game, the Huskies had won five of their last six overtime contests. The game was NIU’s first overtime game at home since 2017 and its first home overtime loss since Oct. 15, 2016, a three OT loss to Central Michigan.

ON THE OFFENSE

TELLY TIME:

Playing in just his second game, freshman Telly Johnson Jr. rushed for 141 yards on 23 carries with a pair of rushing touchdowns in NIU’s win at Western Michigan after replacing starter Antario Brown, who went down midway through the first quarter. Johnson’s 141 rushing yards were the most by a Huskie back in a game this season and the TDs – of 6 and 26 yards – were the first of his career. He was named the MAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Johnson carried six times for 48 yards at Ball State in his first collegiate action.

DUAL THREAT:

Senior running back Gavin Williams, who transferred to NIU from Iowa in 2023, also stepped up at WMU with a rushing and a receiving touchdown, 42 rushing yards on eight carries and three catches for 22 yards. With the 42 rushing yards, Williams became the 46th player in school history to reach the 1,000-yard mark at NIU. Including his 212 receiving yards, he has 1,230 career all-purpose yards and six touchdowns.

TWO MINUTE:

The 2024 Huskies have been effective in “two-minute” situations, scoring in the final minutes of a half eight times, including four times in the last three games. Four times, Kanon Woodill has finished those drives with field goals, including the game-winner at Notre Dame, the game-tying kick versus Buffalo to send the game to overtime and the kick to give NIU the lead at Ball State. Last week, quarterback Ethan Hampton directed a 12-play, 60-yard drive, hitting Gavin Williams who scored from five yards out, to give the Huskies a 21-14 halftime lead.
