Cardinals recall LHP Packy Naughton from Triple-A Memphis; RHP Drew VerHagen placed on 10-day injured list

ST. LOUIS, MO., – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have recalled left-handed pitcher Packy Naughton (pronounced NAW-tuhn) from Memphis (AAA) and placed right-handed pitcher Drew VerHagen on the 10-day injured list with a right hip impingement.

Naughton, 26, who joined the Cardinals organization in Spring Training after being claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on March 21, made five relief outings for Memphis this season, posting a 1-0 record with a 1.80 ERA (10.0 IP), 12 strikeouts, and a pair walks. Naughton pitched 2.0 innings or longer in four outings, including a season-high 3.0 frames on April 15 while striking out six.

Naughton made his Major League debut with the Angels in 2021, compiling an 0-4 mark with a 6.35 ERA (22.2 IP) in seven games (five starts).

The Boston, Mass. native was originally selected by the Reds in the 9th round of the 2017 MLB Draft and was recognized as the 2019 Reds Minor League Pitcher of the Year.  

VerHagen appeared in three games for St. Louis, logging a 5.79 ERA and striking out four in 4.2 innings.

With his first appearance with St. Louis, Naughton will be the seventh player to make his Cardinals debut this season. He will wear uniform number 70.
