The Boston Red Sox today announced that infielder Marcelo Mayer has been placed on the Bereavement List. In a corresponding move, the club has recalled infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester.

Mayer, 22, has appeared in 27 games during his rookie MLB season, batting .208 (16-for-77) with three doubles, one triple, and four home runs. He has made 20 starts at third base and two at second. A California native, Mayer was selected No. 4 overall in the 2021 First-Year Player Draft. In 43 games with Worcester this year, he hit .271 (46-for-170) with 43 RBI.

Sogard, 27, returns to the big league roster after hitting .245 (12-for-49) with eight runs scored in 14 games earlier this season. He made 11 starts at first base and one at third. A switch-hitter, Sogard has also played 45 games for Worcester in 2025, batting .234 (39-for-167) with nine doubles, three homers, and 28 runs scored. Drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 12th round of the 2019 MLB Draft, the California product owns a .262 average (33-for-126) across 45 career Major League games—all with Boston over the 2024–25 seasons—playing across four infield positions.
