OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s selected right-handed pitchers Rico Garcia, Spencer Patton, and Austin Pruitt. In a corresponding move, the A’s have designated right-handed pitchers Domingo Acevedo and Jeurys Familia for assignment, and Adam Oller has been optioned to Las Vegas, the club announced today.
Garcia signed a minor league contract with the A’s on Nov. 14, 2022. He was 0-1 with a 2.03 (3 er in 13.1 ip) with nine walks and 19 strikeouts in nine relief outings for the Aviators. Garcia made nine appearances for the A’s in Spring Training, posting an 0-1 record and 2.08 ERA (2 er in 8.2 ip).
Patton signed a minor league contract with the A’s on April 7 and was 1-0 with a 4.32 ERA (4 er in 8.1 ip) with four walks and 10 strikeouts across six relief appearances with Las Vegas. Patton has spent the majority of his career with the Texas Rangers organization, posting a 4-3 record and a career 5.01 ERA (46 er in 82.2 ip) over 85 relief appearances with the Rangers from 2014-15 and 2021-22.
Pruitt pitched for Oakland last year. He became a free agent following the 2022 season and was re-signed by the A’s to a minor league contract on Jan. 10. He was 1-1 with a 3.20 ERA (4 er in 15.2 ip) with five walks and 16 strikeouts across 10 relief outings for the Aviators. Pruitt has made stops in his career in Tampa Bay (2017-19), Houston (2021), Miami (2021), and Oakland (2022-present).
Acevedo was on the Opening Day roster and logged a 10.61 ERA (11 er in 9.1 ip) over nine relief appearances with 16 hits, two walks, two home runs, and seven strikeouts. Acevedo was placed on the injured list on April 12 with a left back strain. He returned on April 27 and allowed six hits, three earned runs, one walk, and had three strikeouts in four appearances since returning.
Familia signed a one-year contract with the A’s on March 26 and appeared in 14 games this season. He allowed 13 hits, 12 runs (nine earned), 13 walks, and two home runs across 12.1 innings pitched. Familia was a non-roster invitee with Arizona this spring and was 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA and .167 opponents batting average before being released by the Diamondbacks.
Oller was on the Opening Day roster and compiled a 10.07 ERA (22 er/ 19.2 ip) with 29 hits, five home runs, 12 walks, and 13 strikeouts across nine games (one start).
