A’s select RHP Mason Miller and recall INF Jordan Diaz from Las Vegas

RHP Trevor May and OF Ramón Laureano Placed on IL

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s selected right-handed pitcher Mason Miller from Triple-A Las Vegas and recalled infielder Jordan Diaz from Las Vegas, the club announced today.  Right-handed pitcher Trevor May was placed on the 15-day injured list with issues related to anxiety and outfielder Ramón Laureano was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to April 17 with a strained left groin.  To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Dany Jiménez was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

“I commend Trevor for speaking up about his mental health, and for taking action to address it,” said A’s general manager David Forst. “The whole A’s organization supports him fully and we are committed to giving Trevor whatever time he needs to be ready to return to playing, as well as continued resources to help all our players tackle the physical and mental challenges they face daily.”

Miller began the year at Double-A Midland and made one start before he was promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas on April 11.  He also made one start with the Aviators and was a combined 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA, .069 opponents batting average and .345 OPS in two starts.  The 24-year-old right-hander struck out 19 and did not walk a batter in 8.2 innings.  Miller was the A’s third round selection in the 2021 First-Year Player Draft and is 1-3 with a 2.83 ERA and .144 opponents batting average in 11 games, including 10 starts, and 28.2 innings in his three seasons.  The last A’s pitcher to start in his debut with fewer games pitched as a professional is Kirk Dressendorfer, who made the A’s Opening Day roster in 1991 and started on April 13 after pitching in just seven games, including four starts, in 19.1 innings with Short-Season Southern Oregon in his professional debut in 1990.

Diaz hit .389 with three RBI in seven games this spring and also went 0-for-10 in four games for Colombia in the World Baseball Classic.  He was optioned to Las Vegas on March 12 and batted .273 with five doubles, a home run and eight RBI in 12 games for the Aviators.  The 22-year-old right-handed hitter made seven starts at second base, three at designated hitter and two at third base.  Diaz made his Major League debut with the A’s last September and batted .265 with three doubles, one RBI and a .621 OPS in 15 games.

Laureano was on the A’s Opening Day roster and was hitting .218 with four doubles, a triple, two home runs and four RBI in 15 games before the injury.  May was also on the A’s Opening Day roster and is 2-3 with a 12.00 ERA and 1.192 opponents OPS in eight relief appearances.  Jiménez was placed on the 15-day injured list yesterday with a strained right shoulder.  He was on the A’s Opening Day roster and had a save and a 5.40 ERA in seven relief appearances.
