OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s selected right-handed pitcher Joey Estes from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned right-handed pitcher Devin Sweet to Las Vegas, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s transferred left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb to the 60-day injured list.
Estes began the year at Double-A Midland, was promoted to Las Vegas on Aug. 1, and combined for a 9-6 record, a 3.74 ERA and .710 opponents OPS in 27 games, 23 starts. He is leading the A’s farm system in innings pitched (137.0), is tied for the lead in wins and games started and ranks second in strikeouts (131). The 21-year-old right-hander is scheduled to make his Major League debut today with a start against Seattle. Estes was acquired from Atlanta on March 14, 2022 with Ryan Cusick, Shea Langeliers and Cristian Pache for Matt Olson. He is 15-20 with a 3.85 ERA in 72 games, including 68 starts, in four seasons in the minors.
Sweet was recalled on Sept. 6 and allowed eight runs on eight hits and five walks in 6.2 innings over five relief appearances with the A’s. He has a 10.38 ERA and 1.047 opponents OPS in seven games overall in the majors, which includes two games with Seattle.
