A’s Select 10 Players to Complete 2022 First-Year Player Draft

The Oakland A’s selected 10 players, including eight pitchers, on Day 3 of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft, the club announced today. The selections include left-handed pitcher Christian Oppor (11th round, Columbus HS), right-handed pitcher T.J. Czyz (12th round, Cosumnes River College), right-handed pitcher Jake Pfennigs (13th round, Oregon State), shortstop Jamaliel Rosado, Jr. (14th round, Leadership Christian Academy), right-handed pitcher Mark Adamiak (15th round, Arkansas), right-handed pitcher Blaze Pontes (16th round, Hawaii), right-handed pitcher Jake Garland (17th round, Miami), right-handed pitcher Vince Reilly (18th round, Grand Canyon University), first baseman Tommy Stevenson (19th round, Missouri Southern State) and right-handed pitcher Derek True (20th round, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo).

Oppor allowed just one earned run in nine games with Columbus High School in Wisconsin while compiling a 4-2 record. He struck out 91 and walked 23 and earned Honorable Mention All-State honors from the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association.

Czyz went 7-3 with a 2.96 ERA in 15 games, including 13 starts, for Cosumnes River College in Sacramento. In 85.0 innings, he struck out 117 and walked just 33 while surrendering two home runs. Czyz was born in Truckee, Calif., and graduated from Bishop Manogue HS in Reno, Nev.

Pfennigs went 4-1 with a 3.96 ERA in 11 starts for Oregon State. He struck out 30 and walked 27 in 36.1 innings. The 22-year-old right-hander pitched four seasons for the Beavers and compiled a 12-4 record and a 3.75 ERA in 45 games, including 31 starts.

Rosado is from Carolin, Puerto Rico, and attended Leadership Christian Academy. He committed to Florida International University.

Adamiak was 2-0 with a 3.95 ERA in nine games, including three starts, for Arkansas City. He struck out 18 and walked eight without surrendering a home run in 13.2 innings. The 21-year-old right-hander redshirted his second season and was 2-0 with a 5.28 ERA in 11 games in two seasons with the Razorbacks.

Pontes earned First Team All-Big West honors after going 5-1 with a save and a 2.94 ERA in 20 games, including seven starts, for Hawaii. He struck out 88 and walked 26 in 70.1 innings. The 22-year-old right-hander was 12-7 with two saves, a 3.78 ERA and 162 strikeouts in 159.1 innings in 50 career games, including eight starts, in four seasons with Hawaii.

Garland was 6-2 with a save and a 3.99 ERA in 14 games, including 12 starts, for Miami. He struck out 32 and walked just five in 26.1 innings. The 21-year-old right-hander was 13-6 with a 4.67 ERA in 36 games, including 25 starts, in three seasons with the Hurricanes.

Reilly was 7-1 with a school-record 14 saves and a 4.93 ERA in 31 relief appearances for Grand Canyon. He struck out 32 in 34.2 innings and walked 16. The 21-year-old right-hander was 7-2 with 24 saves and a 4.64 ERA in 43 relief appearances in three collegiate seasons, including his freshman campaign at Hawaii.

Stevenson hit .385 with 16 home runs, 42 RBI and a 1.285 OPS in 40 games for Missouri Southern to earn ABCA 2nd Team All-Central Region honors as a catcher. He also earned second team All-MIAA honors after leading the league in on-base percentage and ranking second in slugging. The 21-year-old right-handed hitter batted .350 with 32 home runs and 110 RBI in 103 career games for the Lions and had a career OPS of 1.132.

True was 1-1 with a 4.79 ERA in 19 relief appearances with Cal Poly. In 20.2 innings, he struck out 23 and walked 11. The 21-year-old right-hander was 3-4 with a 5.83 ERA in 40 games, two starts, in three seasons for the Mustangs.

The A’s selected a total of 21 players in the Draft, including 17 from the college ranks and four high school athletes. The breakdown includes 11 pitchers, one catcher, five infielders and four outfielders.
