A’s Reinstate INF Ryan Noda from IL, Place RHP Luis Medina on 15-day IL

C/1B Tyler Soderstrom optioned; RHP Spencer Patton selected; RHP James Kaprielian transferred to 60-day IL

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s have reinstated infielder Ryan Noda from the injured list, placed right-handed pitcher Luis Medina on the 15-day injured list retroactive to Aug. 19 with a blister on the right index finger, selected right-handed pitcher Spencer Patton from Las Vegas, and optioned catcher/first baseman Tyler Soderstrom to Las Vegas, the club announced today. To clear space on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher James Kaprielian was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Noda returns to the A’s after landing on the injured list with a fractured mandible on July 19. Before going on the IL, Noda was hitting .229 with a .375 on-base percentage and .794 OPS with 11 home runs in 90 games with Oakland. In four rehab games with Las Vegas, he hit .400 with a 1.200 OPS, two home runs, eight walks, and just three strikeouts in four games.

Medina is 3-8 with a 5.44 ERA in 18 appearances, including 13 starts, for the A’s this season. He has walked 43 while striking out 84 batters. The right-hander pitched just 3.0 innings in his last outing, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits.

Patton will rejoin the A’s for his second stint with the club this season. In four games in May, he logged a 6.75 ERA in 5.1 innings pitched with Oakland, striking out one and walking one. In 40 games with Las Vegas this season, he is 4-1 with five saves and a 4.68 ERA to go along with 46 strikeouts and 19 walks in 42.1 innings pitched.

Soderstrom returns to Triple-A after being recalled on July 14. In 27 games with the A’s, he hit .165 with a .484 OPS including two home runs and seven walks. In 69 games this season for the Aviators, he is hitting .254 with 20 home runs and an .838 OPS.

Kaprielian was 2-6 with a 6.34 ERA and .819 opponents OPS in 14 games, including 11 starts, over three stints with the A’s when he was placed on the 15-day IL with a strained right shoulder on June 27. He underwent right shoulder arthroscopic surgery on Aug. 2 to repair his posterior labrum.
