A’s place RHP Adrián Martínez on injured list

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s placed right-handed pitcher Adrián Martínez on the 15-day injured list retroactive to April 23 with a strained right elbow, the club announced today. The move clears a 25-man spot for left-handed pitcher Sam Long, who was acquired from the San Francisco Giants yesterday for cash considerations. To clear a spot for Long on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated infielder Dérmis Garcia for assignment.

Martínez began the season in the A’s bullpen and has a 6.75 ERA and .284 opponents batting average in six relief appearances. He has tossed at least two innings in all six of his appearances and leads Major League relievers in innings pitched (17.1).

Long began the season at Triple-A Sacramento and was 1-0 with a 9.90 ERA in four relief appearances. He allowed 11 runs on 14 hits and five walks in 10.0 innings before he was designated for assignment on Wednesday. The 27-year-old left-handed pitcher was 1-3 with a save, a 3.61 ERA and .238 opponents batting average in 28 games, including six starts, with the Giants last year. Long has spent parts of two seasons in the majors with San Francisco and is 3-4 with a save and a 4.55 ERA in 40 games, including 11 starts.

Garcia has spent the entire season at Triple-A Las Vegas where he is batting .242 with an .829 OPS, three home runs and 12 RBI in 16 games. He made his Major League debut with the A’s last year and hit .207 with five home runs and 20 RBI in 39 games.
