OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s placed outfielder Lawrence Butler on the bereavement list and recalled infielder Kevin Smith from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.
Butler was recalled from Las Vegas on Aug. 11 and is batting .246 with four home runs and nine RBI in 23 games in his Major League debut. He had his first career two-homer game yesterday against the Blue Jays and drove in a career-high three runs.
Smith joins the A’s for the third time this year and is batting .191 with four home runs, eight RBI and a .546 OPS in 34 games over his first two stints. He was with Oakland from April 10 to May 13 and June 6 to Aug. 4, which included a stint on the injured list from June 16 to Aug. 4 with a strained back. The 27-year-old right-handed hitter is batting .351 with six home runs and 20 RBI in 19 games with the Aviators since he was optioned on Aug. 5 and is hitting .324 with 16 home runs, 46 RBI and a 1.025 OPS in 42 games overall at Triple-A.
