A’s claim RHP Domingo Tapia off waivers from Kansas City

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s claimed right-handed pitcher Domingo Tapia off waivers from the Kansas City Royals and optioned him to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated outfielder Mickey McDonald for assignment.

Tapia began the season at Triple-A Omaha and had a 3.60 ERA and .188 opponents batting average in five relief appearances when he was designated for assignment on April 24. He combined for a 4-1 record, a 2.67 ERA and .208 opponents batting average in 34 relief appearances with Seattle and Kansas City last year. The 30-year-old right-hander made his Major League debut with Boston in 2020 and is 4-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 39 career appearances in the majors. Tapia is 39-50 with six saves and a 4.12 ERA in 270 games, including 102 starts, in 12 seasons as a minor leaguer.

McDonald was selected from Las Vegas on April 20 and went 0-for-4 in four games in his ML debut before he was optioned to Las Vegas yesterday. He is batting .222 with a home run and three RBI in 10 games with the Aviators.
