A’s acquire LHP Andrew Chafin from the Chicago Cubs

OF Greg Deichmann and Minor League RHP Daniel Palencia sent to Chicago

 

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s have acquired left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin and cash from the Chicago Cubs for outfielder Greg Deichmann and minor league right-handed pitcher Daniel Palencia, the club announced today.

 

Chafin is 0-2 with a 2.06 ERA and .154 opponents batting average in 43 relief appearances with the Cubs. He ranks third among National League relievers in opponents OPS (.461), fifth in opponents slugging percentage (.228), seventh in ERA, eighth in opponents batting average and ninth in on-base percentage (.233). Chafin is tied for 10th in the NL in games pitched. The 31-year-old left-hander had a career-high 24.1-inning scoreless streak snapped in his last outing on Saturday against Arizona and has not allowed a run in 39 of his 43 appearances.

 

Chafin made his Major League debut with Arizona in 2014 and spent six and one-half seasons with the Diamondbacks before he was dealt to the Cubs at the 2020 trading deadline. He is 10-15 with three saves, a 3.47 ERA and .228 opponents batting average in 384 career appearances in eight seasons in the majors. Chafin has 283 games pitched over the last five years, which are second most in the majors to his new teammate, Yusmeiro Petit (289).

 

Deichmann was hitting .300 with four home runs and 35 RBI in 60 games with Triple-A Las Vegas. He walked 50 times for a .433 on-base percentage and also had seven stolen bases. The 26-year-old left-handed hitting outfielder was the A’s second round selection in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft and is a .248 hitter with 30 home runs and 129 RBI in 244 games in four seasons in the A’s farm system.

 

Palencia was 0-2 with a 6.91 ERA in six games, all starts, with Low-A Stockton. He allowed a .309 batting average and struck out 14 while walking six in 14.1 innings. The 21-year-old right-hander was signed by the A’s out of Venezuela on Feb. 13, 2020.
