TEMPE, ARIZ. – The Angels today have agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.5 million contract with infielder Matt Duffy. In a corresponding 40-man roster move, RHP Griffin Canning been placed on the 60-day injured list.
Duffy, 31, appeared in 97 games for the Chicago Cubs last season and hit .287 (83/289) with 12 doubles, five home runs and 30 RBI. Defensively, he saw time at third base (56 G), second base (21 G), shortstop (5 G), left field (3 G), first base (2 G) and pitcher (1 G).
A native of Long Beach, Calif., Duffy made his Major League debut in 2014 with San Francisco and appeared in eight postseason games that year during the Giants World Series Championship run. He was originally selected by the Giants in the 18th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft and also appeared in the postseason in 2019 with Tampa Bay.
For his career, Duffy is a .283 (539/1905) hitter with 86 doubles, nine triples, 27 home runs, 199 RBI and 40 stolen bases across 549 Major League games for the Giants (2014-16), Rays (2016, 2018-19) and Cubs (2021).
