ANAHEIM — The Angels today agreed to a one-year, $30 million contract with RHP/DH Shohei Ohtani for the 2023 season. With the agreement, the arbitration process is avoided.
Ohtani, 28, has made 27 pitching starts this season and has currently compiled a 15-8 record with a 2.35 ERA (161 IP – 42 ER) and 213 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .207 average (123/595). In 152 games as a hitter, he has 88 runs scored, 29 doubles, six triples, 34 home runs, 94 RBI, 71 walks, 11 stolen bases and a .888 OPS.
Across his five seasons with the Angels, Ohtani has totaled 62 pitching starts, going 28-13 with a 2.98 ERA (344.2 IP – 114 ER) and 435 strikeouts. In 561 games as a hitter, he has 324 runs scored, 102 doubles, 21 triples, 127 home runs, 341 RBI, 66 stolen bases and an .890 OPS.
A two-time All-Star, Ohtani was the 2018 American League Rookie of the Year and a unanimous selection as the 2021 American League Most Valuable Player. The Ōshū, Japan native originally signed with the Angels on Dec. 9, 2017 following five seasons with the Nippon-Ham Fighters in the Japanese Pacific League.
