World Series Game 3 – Postgame Notes

SERIES AT 2-1
• This is the 93rd time in World Series history that the Fall Classic has stood at 2-1 after three games. It is the eighth consecutive World Series to sit at 2-1, and it is the 18th time in the last 21 World Series (beginning 2000) it has occurred.

GAME FOUR SIGNIFICANCE
• Of the previous 92 times that a World Series has been 2-1, the team leading the series 2-1 has gone on to win the series 61 times (66.3%), including five in the last eight occurrences (2015 Royals, 2017 Astros, 2018 Red Sox, 2019 Nationals, 2020 Dodgers). The 2013 Cardinals, 2014 Royals and 2016 Indians each had a 2-1 lead before losing the Fall Classic.

• Of the previous 92 times that the Fall Classic has been 2-1, the team leading 2-1 has gone on to win the following game to take a 3-1 series lead 45 times (48.9%).

• Of the 45 teams leading 3-1 to have won Game 4 and take a 3-1 lead, 38 (84.4%) have gone on to win the Fall Classic (including 1912 Game 5 following Game 2 tie), including 11 of the last 12 times (Los Angeles in 1988, Toronto in 1992 and 1993, Atlanta in 1995, New York Yankees in 2000, St. Louis in 2006, Philadelphia in 2008, New York in 2009, San Francisco in 2010, Kansas City in 2015 and Boston in 2018), with the 2016 Cleveland Indians being the lone exception. Prior to the Indians, the last team to take a 3-1 series lead and lose the Fall Classic was the 1985 St. Louis Cardinals.

• Of the 47 teams leading 2-1 that have lost Game 4 to even the Series at two games apiece, 23 (48.9%) have gone on to win the World Series, including four of the last seven (2011 Cardinals, 2017 Astros, 2019 Nationals, 2020 Dodgers). The 2003 Yankees, 2013
Cardinals and 2014 Royals each lost Game 4 after holding a 2-1 series lead and went on to lose the World Series.

GAME 3 RESULTS
• The Braves are now 3-7 all-time in Game 3 of the World Series (1999-New York Yankees; 1996-New York Yankees; 1995-Cleveland Indians; 1992-Toronto Blue Jays; 1991 Minnesota Twins; 1958-New York Yankees; 1957-New York Yankees; 1948-Cleveland Indians; 1914-Philadelphia Athletics). They are now 2-1 this Postseason in Game 3s, previously falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS but defeating the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS.

• The Astros are now 2-2 all-time in Game 3 of the World Series (2019-Washington Nationals; 2017-Los Angeles Dodgers; and 2005-Chicago White Sox). They are now 0-3 this year in Game 3s, previously falling to the Chicago White Sox in the ALDS and the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS.

BRAVES AT 2-1
• The Braves find themselves leading 2-1 in a World Series for the fourth time in Club history. They will look to replicate their effort from 1995 when they would go on to defeat the Cleveland Indians over six games. The Braves lost to the New York Yankees across six games in 1996, and to the Yankees across seven games in 1958.

ASTROS AT 1-2
• The Astros find themselves down 1-2 in a World Series for the second time in franchise history. They will look to reverse their effort from 2019 when they would go on to lose to the Washington Nationals over seven games.

ROOKIE STARTERS
• Tonight’s starting pitcher matchup of Ian Anderson (Braves) and Luis Garcia (Astros) marked the eighth in World Series history to feature a pair of rookies, most recently done in Game 1 of the 2006 Fall Classic between Anthony Reyes of the Cardinals and Justin Verlander of the Tigers.

• Other World Series rookie starting pitcher matchups included: 1948 Game 3 – Vern Bickford, BOS vs. Gene Bearden, CLE; 1950 Game 4 – Bob Miller, PHI vs. Whitey Ford, NYY; 1967 Game 6 – Dick Hughes, STL vs. Gary Waslewski, BOS; 1981 Game 3 – Dave Righetti, NYY vs. Fernando Valenzuela, LAD; 1983 Game 2 – Mike Boddicker, BAL vs. Charles Hudson, PHI; and 1997 Game 4 – Jaret Wright, CLE vs. Tony Saunders, FLA.

• Anderson became the second rookie starting pitcher in Braves World Series history, joining Bickford (1948 G3). Garcia similarly became the second rookie starter in Astros franchise history, joining his rotation-mate José Urquidy.

ANDERSON
• Ian Anderson delivered 5.0 no-hitting innings tonight with four strikeouts while allowing three walks. He became the second pitcher in World Series history to toss at least 5.0 no-hit innings in an outing, joining Don Larsen (1956 G5). It marked the sixth such effort overall in Postseason history, also accomplished by Aníbal Sánchez (2013 ALCS G1), Roy Halladay (2010 NLDS G1), Paul Abbott (2001 ALCS G4) and Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez (1999 ALDS G5).

• Anderson became the second rookie in MLB World Series history to log at least five no-hit frames in a Fall Classic contest, joining Jeff Tesreau (1912 G1). He became the fourth rookie in MLB Postseason history to accomplish the feat.

• Ian’s no-hit bid was tied for the second-longest by a Braves pitcher in a World Series game with Hall of Famer Tom Glavine (1995 G6), trailing only Bill James’ 5.1-inning no-hit effort in Game 2 of the 1914 Fall Classic.

• With 5.0 scoreless innings in tonight’s game, Ian has compiled a career Postseason ERA of 1.26, marking the fourth-lowest all-time through a player’s first eight career Postseason starts. He trails only Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson (0.99), Orlando Hernandez (1.22) and Cliff Lee (1.26). • Anderson became the first Major League hurler to allow five-or-fewer earned runs over his first eight career Postseason starts.

ATLANTA’S TWO-HITTER
• Braves pitchers combined for 9.0 shutout innings while allowing just two hits tonight. It marked the 18th two-hit shutout in World Series history and the first since the 2012 San Francisco Giants in Game 2.

EDDIE
• Eddie Rosario reached base twice tonight with a walk and single. His 21 hits this Postseason are third-most in a single Postseason, trailing Marquis Grisson’s 25 hits in 1995 and Grissom’s 23 hits in 1996. Through 13 games this Postseason, he has collected eight runs, 34 total bases, two doubles, three home runs and 11 RBI.

• Rosario’s 21 hits this Postseason are tied for eighth-most by a left-handed batter in a single Postseason, and trail Darin Erstad (25, 2002), Tino Martinez (24, 2000), Jacoby Ellsbury (22, 2013), David Ortiz (22, 2004), Juan Pierre (22, 2003), Corey Seager (22, 2020) and J.T. Snow (22, 2002).

TDA
• Travis d’Arnaud delivered a double and home run tonight. The round-tripper was the seventh of his Postseason career, tied with Gary Sánchez (7) for fifth-most among catchers in Postseason history, trailing Jason Varitek (11), Jorge Posada (11) and Javy López (10), as well as Hall of Famers Yogi Berra (10) and Johnny Bench (10).

RILEY
• Austin Riley recorded an RBI double tonight, his second extra-base hit of the 2021 Fall Classic. His seven extra-base hits are fifth-most in Braves Postseason history by a player younger than 25-years-old, trailing Hall of Famer Chipper Jones (14), Ronald Acuña Jr. (12), Andruw Jones (9) and Ozzie Albies (8). In addition, his 11 career Postseason RBI are third-most by a Braves player prior to turning 25-years-old, trailing only A. Jones (20) and C. Jones (17).

• The two-bagger was Riley’s fifth game-tying or go-ahead hit of the 2021 Postseason, second-most in a single Postseason
in franchise history behind only Brian Jordan’s seven such hits in 1999.

GARCIA
• Luis Garcia tallied six punchouts across 3.2 innings tonight. He became the fourth pitcher in Astros Posteason history to notch six-or-more strikeouts in fewer than 4.0 innings, joining Cristian Javier (ALDS G3), Lance McCullers Jr. (ALCS G7) and Jose Cabrera (1999 NLDS G3).

BREGMAN
• Alex Bregman notched his 60th career Postseason hit tonight, which ranks fifth in MLB Postseason history by a player prior to turning 28-years-old, trailing Hall of Famer Derek Jeter (93), Carlos Correa (77), Hall of Famer Chipper Jones (68) and Albert Pujols (61).

SCORE FIRST
• The Braves plated a third-inning run for the first run of tonight’s contest. Teams scoring first in the 2021 Postseason are now 27-7.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
• The Braves are now 6-0 at home this Postseason. That’s the second-longest such Postseason streak in franchise history, trailing an eight-game run from October 7, 1995-October 9, 1996.
