A’s exercise option on manager Mark Kotsay’s contract for 2025

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s have exercised the club option on manager Mark Kotsay’s contract for the 2025 season, the club announced today.

“Mark’s leadership, character, and integrity have been a hallmark of his time with the A’s; first as a player and a coach, and, for the last two years, as our manager,” said General Manager David Forst. “Picking up his option was an obvious decision to make for our club, and I look forward to having him lead the A’s on the field through 2025 and hopefully beyond.”

Kotsay was announced as the 19th manager in Oakland history and the 31st in Athletics history on Dec. 21, 2021, and recorded his 100th managerial win on Sept. 1, 2023. Overall, he has compiled a 111-214 (.340) record across two seasons, while managing an A’s record 56 rookies and a total of 104 players.

He previously spent six seasons on the A’s coaching staff, serving as bench coach (2016-17), quality control coach (2018-20), and third base coach (2021). He made his professional coaching debut as the San Diego Padres hitting coach in 2015. Kotsay played 17 seasons in the Major Leagues from 1997-2013, including a four-year stint with Oakland from 2004-07 and joined Tony La Russa and Jeff Newman as the only people to both play for and manage the Oakland A’s.
