NHL Preview: Anaheim Ducks (1-2-0) at Arizona Coyotes (2-2-0)

The Ducks fell 3-2 to the Dallas Stars Thursday night at Honda Center. Leo Carlsson (18 years, 297 days) scored his first NHL goal to become the second-youngest player in Ducks history to score in his NHL debut, behind only Mason McTavish (18 years, 256 days on Oct. 13, 2021; 1-1=2). Carlsson is also the third-youngest player in franchise history to record a point, trailing only McTavish and Oleg Tverdovsky (18 years, 250 days, Jan. 23, 1995 @ WPG; 0-3=3). Troy Terry opened the scoring with his first goal of the campaign at 4:37 of the game and added an assist on Carlsson’s first career goal. Trevor Zegras recorded the primary assist on Terry’s opening goal, his first point of the season (0-1=1). Pavel Mintyukov earned his first career assist on Terry’s goal, recording a point in his second straight game. He is one of three players in Ducks history to begin his career with points in each of his first two home games, joining Corey Perry (2 GP in 2005-06) and Matt Cullen (2 GP in 1997-98). John Gibson stopped 21-of-24 shots. Tristan Luneau made his NHL debut, becoming the seventh-youngest Ducks defensemen to appear in a game.

TODAY’S GAME: The Anaheim Ducks open the first half of a back-to-back matchup in a matinee contest today against the Arizona Coyotes at Mullett Arena (1 p.m. PT, TV: Bally Sports SoCal, AUDIO: Ducks Stream). The Ducks continue their nine-game October schedule, including their first of seven matinee contests this season. The other matinee contests include Oct. 28 @ PHI (10 a.m. PT), Nov. 24 vs. LAK (12:30 p.m. PT), Jan. 15 @ FLA (10 a.m. PT), Feb. 19 @ BUF (9:30 a.m. PT), Mar. 30 @ EDM (1 p.m. PT) and Mar. 31 @ VAN (12:30 p.m. PT). DUCKS-COYOTES: Anaheim and the Arizona Coyotes open a three-game season series tonight with the sole road contest at Mullett Arena. During the 2022-23 campaign, the Ducks went 2-0-1 in the season series picking up a 5-2 win (Jan. 24) and 2-1 victory (Jan. 28), and tallied a point in a 5-4 overtime loss (Apr. 8). Cam Fowler paced the team in scoring with four points (2-2=4) and tied for the club lead in assists (2) along with Trevor Zegras, Troy Terry, and Ryan Strome. In the Apr. 8, 2023 at Mullett Arena contest, Fowler skated in an NHL record 38:54. Adam Henrique led the Ducks in goal scoring (3). The Ducks own an 83-42-21 all-time record vs. the Coyotes, including a 37-24-12 mark on the road. Anaheim’s 83 all-time wins and 192 points vs. the Coyotes franchise (including Winnipeg) are each the most vs. a single opponent in club history. Cam Fowler paces active Ducks skaters in career scoring (9-27=36) and assists vs. the Coyotes while Adam Henrique paces the club in career goals (11 in 23 GP).   • Arizona returns to Mullett Arena to renew the “Mullett Magic”. Last year, the Coyotes went 21-15-5 when playing at home, their most home wins and points since 2015-16. The Coyotes look to win their home opener for the first time since 2016-17, when they beat the Flyers in a 4-3 OT finish. Arizona is 1-3-3 in their last seven home openers.
  • Through four games, the Coyotes are third in the NHL in power play percentage (31.6%). This is a 12.7% increase from last season’s mark of 18.9% that landed them at 24th in the league.
  • Forwards Clayton Keller (2-3-5) and Nick Schmaltz (2-3-5) currently lead all Coyotes in scoring to start the season. The duo looks to lead the team in scoring for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
