Prior to today’s doubleheader, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
- Signed RHP Zach McAllister (#29) to a Major League contract and selected him to the active roster.
- Placed RHP Jonathan Loáisiga on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 9/10) with right elbow inflammation.
- Additionally, INF Anthony Rizzo was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Earlier today, the Yankees claimed RHP Luke Weaver off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.
Weaver, 30, has gone 2-5 with a 6.77 ERA (110.1IP, 141H, 85R/83ER, 37BB, 93K, 26HR) in 26 games (22 starts) this season with the Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners. The right-handed pitcher also made two starts this season with Triple-A Louisville in the Reds organization (9.0IP, 3H, 3ER, 4BB, 9K, 1HR). Weaver signed a one-year Major League contract with Cincinnati on January 13, 2023 and went 2-4 with a 6.87 ERA (97.0IP, 125H, 76R/74ER, 34BB, 85K, 24HR) in 21 starts. He was released by the Reds on August 18, 2023 and signed a Major League contract with the Mariners on August 22, 2023. In five games (one start) with Seattle, Weaver went 0-1 with a 6.08 ERA (13.1IP, 16H, 9ER, 3BB, 8K, 2HR). He was then designated for assignment by Seattle on September 10, 2023.
Over parts of eight Major League seasons with St. Louis (2016-18), Arizona (2019-22), Kansas City (2022), Cincinnati (2023) and Seattle (2023), Weaver has gone 26-41 with a 5.18 ERA (561.0IP, 624H, 348R/323ER, 185BB, 555K, 87HR). He was originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 19th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, but did not sign. He was then drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round (27th overall) of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Florida State University.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have transferred LHP Nestor Cortes to the 60-day injured list.
