MLS Preview: San Jose Earthquakes (9-9-9) at D. C. United (9-12-6)

D. C. United and the San Jose Earthquakes have met six time since the start of the 2015 season. In that time, each side has recorded win, a draw and a loss both home and away.

D. C. United defeated the Chicago Fire, 4-0, on Saturday, its largest margin of victory since a 7-1 win over Toronto FC in July 2021. It was D, C, United’s 20th regular-season win by a margin of four goals or more, tied for the second most in MLS history (Los Angeles Galaxy – 31).

The San Jose Earthquakes have won just two of its last 46 regular-season away matches against Eastern Conference opposition dating back to May 2012 (D9 K35). One of those two wins was a 2-0 victory over D. C. United in August 2015.

Christian Benteke scored twice against the Chicago Fire on Saturday, the first multi-goal game for a D. C. United player since July 2022 (T/ Fountas), ending a run of 44 straight league games without a player scoring more than once.

Cade Cowell’s strike for the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday was the eighth San Jose Earthquakes goal scored from outside the box this season, the most in a single season for the San Jose Earthquakes since scoring 13 times from outside the box during the 2012 season.
