YESTERDAY’S NEWS: The Yankees fell to the Nationals, 2-1, in their series opener on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium… LHP Carlos Rodón (6.0IP, 6H, 1ER, 0BB, 1K, 1HR, 1HP) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list and allowed just 1ER in a season-high 6.0 innings in a no-decision…C Ben Rortvedt (2-for-2, 1R, 1HR, 1RBI, 1BB) collected both of the Yankees’ hits and reached base a career-high three times, hitting game-tying solo HR in the third inning, walking in the fifth and singling in the seventh…LF Everson Pereira (0-for-3, 1BB) made his Major League debut and walked in his first plate appearance…1B DJ LeMahieu (0-for-2, 2BB) walked twice…RHP Jonathan Loáisiga (1.0IP, 1K) tossed a perfect seventh inning…RHP Tommy Kahnle (1.0IP, 1H, 1ER, 2K, 1HR) took his second loss of the season after allowing a go-ahead HR to CJ Abrams in the eighth inning… RHP Keynan Middleton (1.0IP, 2BB, 1K) tossed a scoreless ninth inning.

RARE OCCURENCE: The Yankees have lost nine straight games for the first time in the last 41 years (since 1983)…own just one of the 276 losing streaks of at least nine games in that span…are one of two teams to record just one losing streak of at least nine games during that stretch, joining only the St. Louis Cardinals.

WHAT A CATCH: C Ben Rortvedt collected both of the Yankees’ hits and reached base a career-high three times on Tuesday, hitting game-tying solo HR in the third inning, walking in the fifth and singling in the seventh.

BRONX BOMBERS: Yankees batters have hit 103HR in 67 home games this season, the fourth-most home runs by any team at home this year…trail only Atlanta (125HR), Texas (113HR) and Los Angeles-NL (104HR).

GLOVE STORY: According to Sports Info Solutions, INF Anthony Volpe’s 13 defensive runs saved this season are tied for second among Major League shortstops, trailing
only Tampa Bay’s Wander Franco (15DRS)…has made just four errors in his last 67 games that he has appeared defensively (since 5/31) after making seven errors in his first 56 games (3/30-5/30).
