BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:
- Reinstated right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck from the 15-Day Injured List.
- Optioned left-handed pitcher Chris Murphy to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against the Houston Astros.
- Placed outfielder Jarren Duran on the 10-Day Injured List (retroactive to August 21) with a left great toe sprain.
- Recalled outfielder Wilyer Abreu from Worcester. He will wear number 52.

Houck, 27, was placed on the Injured List on June 17 with a facial fracture and allowed two runs in 8.2 innings over three rehab starts with Worcester. The right-hander has posted a 5.05 ERA (38 ER/67.2 IP) over 13 starts for the Red Sox this season. Selected by Boston in the first round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft, Houck owns a 3.66 ERA (87 ER/213.2 IP) in 66 career appearances (33 starts).
Murphy, 25, allowed two runs in 4.0 innings last night against Houston. The left-hander has posted a 3.72 ERA (16 ER/38.2 IP) in 13 games with Boston this season, his Major League debut. Selected by the Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, Murphy has also recorded a 7.01 ERA (34 ER/43.2 IP) in 12 games (nine starts) with Worcester in 2023.
Duran, 26, has hit .295 (98-for-332) with 34 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, 46 runs scored, and 24 stolen bases in 102 games with the Red Sox this season. The left-handed hitter has made 62 starts in center field and 20 in left field. Selected by Boston in the seventh round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has batted .258 (166-for-643) with 51 doubles, 86 runs scored, and 33 stolen bases in 193 career games (2021-23).
Abreu, 24, has batted .274 (82-for-299) with 11 doubles, one triple, 22 home runs, and 59 RBI in 86 games for Worcester this season while making 35 starts in left field, 27 in right field, 15 in center field, and eight as the designated hitter. The left-handed hitter owns an active 12-game hitting streak over which he has hit .488 (20-for-41) with a 1.751 OPS, four doubles, eight home runs, and 23 RBI. Acquired from the Houston Astros in August 2022, the Venezuela native is ranked as the Red Sox’ No. 17 prospect by MLB.com.
