MLS Preview: D. C. United (8-10-6) at New York Red Bulls (6-9-8)

This will be the 100th MLS meeting between the New York Red Bulls and D. C. United (including playoffs), the first fixture in league history to reach that milestone. The New York Red Bulls have lost only one of its last 15 home MLS matches against D. C. United (W9 D5, including playoffs) dating back to 2013.

The New York Red Bulls suffered their first regular-season losing streak of 2023 before the Leagues Cup break, losing to FC Cincinnati and Real Salt Lake. The New York Red Bulls hasn’t suffered three straight league defeats in nearly four years, since losing three in a row in August-September 2019.

D. C. United has managed to avoid defeat in eight of its last 16 road matches this season (W5 D3), including one penalty shoot-out loss), including three of of the last four (W2 D1). D. C. United has six clean sheets on the road this season, a total they’ve surpassed just once since 2006 (7 in 2009).

The New York Red Bulls have held opponents to fewer than 10 shot attempts in each of their last 10 regular-season matches, the longest run of matches allowing-single-digit shot attempts in MLS since Opta began detailed data collection in 2010.

Christian Benteke has won an MLS-high 170 aerial duels this season (253 contested). In fact, only the New York Red Bulls’ Sean Nealis (112/276) has contested as many aerial duels as Benteke has won in 2023.
