Prior to today’s game against the Minnesota Twins, the Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz from triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for him on the 26-man roster, right-handed pitcher Yunior Marte was optioned to Lehigh Valley.
Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.
Ortiz, 27, has gone 3-0 with three saves and a 4.06 ERA (14 ER, 31.0 IP), eight walks and 34 strikeouts in 24 games (1 start) for the IronPigs this season. Each of his last five appearances with Lehigh Valley have been scoreless (5.1 IP) and he has recorded five strikeouts with no walks issued in that span. Over his four stints with the Phillies this season, the California native has posted a 3.94 ERA (7 ER, 16.0 IP) with five walks and 13 strikeouts in 11 games. He last appeared in the Phillies’ game one win against the Washington Nationals on August 8.
Originally selected in the first round (30th overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers, Ortiz was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from the San Francisco Giants on Nov. 9, 2022.
Marte, 28, has made 36 relief appearances for the Phillies this season over his five stints with the club and has a 5.14 ERA (20 ER, 35.0 IP) with 14 walks and 33 strikeouts.
