BALTIMORE ORIOLES NOTES:
A SEASON SERIES VICTORY: The O’s defeated the Blue Jays last night, 13-3, to clinch the season series against the Jays while improving to 5-0 in Toronto this season…The Orioles scored 10 unanswered runs in the final four innings and have now won six straight games at Rogers Centre dating back to 2022…Gunnar Henderson had three hits and four RBI, including a go-ahead solo home run in the sixth inning, while Anthony Santander hit a grand slam in the eighth inning…Ryan Mountcastle had three hits, including two doubles, while scoring three times and driving in two…Kyle Bradish allowed three runs in 7.0 innings, his 11th quality start of the year, to earn his seventh win.
Baltimore moved to a season-high 25 games over .500. The 13 runs are tied for the third-most runs by the Birds in 2023; all four O’s games with 13+ runs this season have come on the road with three coming since July 6. Santander’s blast was his second career grand slam (5/5/23 at ATL) and the fifth grand slam by the Orioles this year, tied for fourth in MLB; he is the first Oriole with multiple grand slams in one season since Manny Machado hit three in 2017.
SWEEPLESS IN BALTIMORE: With Monday’s win, the Orioles have now gone 74 consecutive series without being swept…According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that is the most consecutive series of at least two decisions (no ties) without getting swept in Orioles history (since 1954), ahead of 46 consecutive sweepless series from 1971-72…It is tied for the fifth-longest such streak in MLB history with the 1904-06 Philadelphia Athletics, trailing the 1942-44 St. Louis Cardinals (124), 1906-09 Chicago Cubs (115), 1903-05 New York Giants (105), and 1922-24 New York Yankees (83).
WHAT’S TRENDING: The O’s have won four of their last five games, nine of 13, 17 of 23, and 18 of 26…At 66-41 (.617), the Orioles have the best record in the AL and second-best in MLB (see box at right)…The Birds are 128-90 (.587) since June 2022, the second-best record in the AL and fourth-best in MLB during that time…The team had a season-best eight-game winning streak from July 5-16, Baltimore’s longest since a 10-gamer from July 3-13, 2022. The O’s hold a 1.5-game lead over the Rays in the AL East. The Orioles have two winning streaks of at least seven games this year; Atlanta (4x), San Francisco (2x), and Tampa Bay (2x) are the only other teams with multiple win streaks of at least seven games this season.
FIRST THINGS FIRST: Baltimore has scored in the first inning in three straight games while plating 11 total runs in the opening inning since July 30…Entering Sunday, the Orioles had scored 44 first-inning runs this season, ranking 25th in MLB…The O’s are 36-10 (.783) when scoring first this year, the best record in MLB.
AGAINST THE BLUE JAYS: The Orioles and Blue Jays are meeting for the third time this season in a four-game series that runs through Thursday…Baltimore is 7-1 against Toronto this season, including 5-0 north of the border, and 16-11 (.593) against the Jays since the start of 2022…The O’s swept a three-game series at Rogers Centre from May 19-21 and took two of three at Oriole Park from June 13-15…The teams meet for the final time in the regular season at Camden Yards from August 22-24. Baltimore has gone 10 straight sets against AL East opponents without losing a series for the first time since doing so in 11 straight series from August 1 to September 30, 2012, per the Elias Sports Bureau.
ROAD WARRIORS: Baltimore is 34-20 (.630) away from Oriole Park this season, the best road record in the AL and second-best in MLB behind Atlanta (32-17, .653)…The Birds are 72-63 (.533) on the road since the beginning of 2022, the third-best record in the AL and fifth-best in MLB during that time…The Orioles have scored 293 runs away from Camden Yards in 2023, the most in the AL and second-most in MLB behind the Dodgers (306).
HOT O’S SUMMER: The Orioles finished last month with a 17-9 (.654) record, tied with the Mariners for the best record in MLB…Since the All-Star break, the O’s are 12-6, tied with the Cubs for the best record in MLB…The Birds have played 42 straight games against teams currently with a winning record while going 25-17 (.595) since June 13.
AY, TONE: Anthony Santander is slashing .277/.352/.520 (83-for-300) with 20 doubles, one triple, 17 homers, 48 runs scored, 51 RBI, 31 walks, four hit-by-pitches, and three stolen bases in 78 games since the start of May…During that time, he ranks among AL leaders in extra-base hits (4th, 38), total bases (5th, 156), homers (6th), slugging percentage (9th), and OPS (10th, .872). Santander has 28 doubles, surpassing his career high of 24 set in 2021 and matched in 2022; he drove in his 300th run with his grand slam last night. He ranks among AL leaders in extra-base hits (T-3rd, 48) and doubles (T-5th, 28). His 19 home runs lead the O’s, are tied for 10th in the AL, and rank third among MLB switch hitters in 2023; Santander’s 52 homers since the start of last season are the most among MLB switch hitters.
TOP GUNN: Gunnar Henderson is slashing .287/.344/.579 (51-for-178) with seven doubles, three triples, 13 homers, 31 runs scored, 35 RBI, 15 walks, one hit-by-pitch, and four stolen bases in 46 games since the start of June…During that time, he’s among AL leaders in home runs (T-4th), slugging percentage (7th), OPS (8th, .923), total bases (8th, 103), and extra-base hits (T-9th, 23)…He ranks among AL rookies this season in bWAR (1st, 3.3), triples (1st, 5), fWAR (2nd, 2.6), runs scored (2nd, 59), home runs (2nd, 18), RBI (3rd, 49), walks (3rd, 44), extra-base hits (3rd, 37), and total bases (3rd, 160)…His 92.4 mph average exit velocity leads MLB rookies and so does his 53.7 percent Hard-Hit rate, which also ranks ninth in the AL and 14th in MLB, per Statcast.
MOUNT UP: Ryan Mountcastle is 5-for-7 with four doubles, four runs scored, five RBI, and one walk in the first two games of this series…He’s slashing .386/.429/.682 (17-for44) with seven doubles, two homers, 10 runs scored, nine RBI, and four walks in 16 games while tallying a hit in 11 of his 12 starts since returning from the Injured List on July 9… Mountcastle has batted .322/.382/.639 (58-for-180) with 12 doubles, 15 home runs, 32 runs scored, 41 RBI, 16 walks, and two hit-by-pitches in 47 career games against the Blue Jays… His 1.021 career OPS is the second-best in MLB history against Toronto (min. 150 PA) behind Los-Angeles-AL’s Mike Trout, who holds a 1.032 mark.
MOUNTAIN TIME: Félix Bautista leads the AL and ranks third in MLB with 29 saves this season…He has secured a win or save in 35 of his 47 appearances (74.5%) this year…That would be the fourth-highest such percentage in O’s history (since 1954)…Bautista is looking to become the eighth Oriole in team history to lead the league in saves and the first since Zack Britton locked down 47 games in 2016…Jim Johnson has the team record of 51 saves set in 2012.
His 101 strikeouts are more than 14 qualified pitchers. Bautista’s 17.59 K/9 (101 K/199 BFP) would be the fourth-best by a qualified reliever in MLB history; Cincinnati’s Aroldis Chapman (2014), Cleveland’s James Karinchak (2020), and Milwaukee’s Devin Williams (2020) are tied for the record with a 17.67 mark.
He is the seventh O’s reliever to reach 100 strikeouts in a season and the first since B.J. Ryan fanned 100 in 2005; Ryan holds the Orioles record for strikeouts as a reliever in one season with 122 in 2004.
DEADLINE DEAL: The Orioles yesterday acquired right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for left-handed pitcher Drew Rom, minor league infielder César Prieto, and minor league right-handed pitcher Zack Showalter…Flaherty is active today and right-handed pitcher Bryan Baker was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk.

THE LATEST: The Blue Jays were ousted, 13-3, by the Orioles last night…The 13 runs allowed were the most by the team this year. Toronto has still won five of its last nine games, 14 of its last 23, and is 33-24 over its last 57 contests… Its .579 win% over that span (since May 26) is tied with Baltimore for the highest in the AL…Is currently holding the 3rd Wild Card spot, 2.0 games back of Houston (61-47) for the 2nd spot, and 1.5 games up on Boston.
