  • The 60-44 mark matches the 3rd-best 104-G start to a season in Washington/Texas franchise history (see chart below).

SERIES STUFF: TEX has dropped 2 straight series after back-to-back sweeps to open 2nd “half” (vs. CLE and TB)… club is 2-5-0 in last 7 series and 2-6-1 in last 9 series…TEX is 4-8-1 in last 13 series following a 6-0-0 span from 5/19- 6/7, longest series win streak for team since club-record 10 straight series victories from 5/20-6/20/16…is 19-12-2 overall in series this year, going 10-5-2 at home and 9-7-0 on the road…is 15-9-2 in last 26 series and 18-10-2 in last 30…on the road, team has lost 4 straight, 1-5-0 in last 6 road series.

  • Rangers’ only wins in last 7 G have been series finales, as TEX is 0-5 in 1st or 2nd games of series beg. 7/21, seeking 1st such win since 7/18 vs. TB.

ON THE ROAD: TEX has lost 5 of 6, 7 of 9, 9 of 12, and 13 of last 20 away games…4-G skid 7/8-23 matched longest road drought in ’23 (also 0-4, 4/24-5/5)…club is still 26-24 (.520) on the road, T4th-best away record in the A.L…from 5/6-30, TEX went 13-4 on the road.

VS. SAN DIEGO: TEX has dropped 9 straight vs. SD (beg. 9/16/18), this after a span of going 7-1 vs. Pads from 5/9/17- 9/15/18…the 9-G skid is one shy of matching the longest losing streak in club history vs. a single opponent: 0-10 from 7/8/76-5/28/77 vs. MIL…TEX trails all-time, 23-26, going 10- 12 overall in America’s Finest City, 8-6 here at Petco (2-6 at Jack Murphy/Qualcomm).

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Texas avoided its 7th shutout of the season last night with a 9th-inning run on a bases loaded walk…the Rangers have still not been shut out in over a month (last 6/24 at NYY)…last night was just the 3rd time since the start of 2022 for Texas to go scoreless over the 1st 8 innings before scoring in the 9th to avert a shutout…last instance was actually a win: 6/16/22 at DET, when an Ezequiel Duran 2-out, 3-R triple in the 9th keyed a 3-1 victory…the other ’22 instance was 4/20/22 at SEA (4-2 loss).

  • Last night was the Rangers’ 7th loss of ’23 by 6-or-more runs, and 3 of those have come since the AS break (also 7/21 vs. LAD and 7/22 vs. LAD)…only teams with fewer such losses in MLB this season are TB-3, ATL-5, and SD-6.

MOSTLY CLEAN: Despite a forgettable play in left field last night (6th inning), when a catchable ball was scored a double, the Rangers once again played an errorless game… team has just 2 errors in the 2nd “half”, T2nd-fewest in MLB (1-MIN, 2-TEX/MIL/SF)…TEX has committed multiple errors in just 2 of the team’s last 80 G beg. 4/27…team has more than 2 errors just once all year: 5 E on 4/8 at CHC…the Rangers’ .988 (43 E/3723 TC) fielding pct. ranks 3rd in the A.L. and 6th in MLB for the season, with a .991 (27 E/2884 TC) fielding pct. since 4/27 ranking 1st in MLB.

CAN’T FIGHT THE YOUTH: After Josh Jung’s performance last night, Texas has 542 TB by players 25-and-younger, 4thmost in MLB to only KC (760), ARI (604), and STL (551).… have 3rd-most HR (49) in that category to KC (56) and STL (54), both of which have 150+ more PA’s than TEX…the TEX HR: 20-Jung, 13-Duran, 11-Taveras, 4-J Smith, 1-Huff.

EVERYDAY MAN: Marcus Semien has started 236 consecutive games for Texas since his lone day off as a Ranger on 5/12/22…he has started 265 of the Rangers’ 266 games
since the beginning of last season at 2B (252) or SS (13), as he has no starts at DH w/ TEX…his current streak of 236 straight games played ranks 2nd in MLB.

  • Of all teams vying for NL Wild Card spots, the Padres’ run differential of 57 is the best of any team…in fact, their run differential ranks 3rd best in the NL overall, behind the Braves’ 143 and Dodgers’ 96.

Padres riding a 9-game winning streak over the Rangers, T-3rd longest active win streak over a single opponent

STARTING PITCHER – YU DARVISH 1
Darvish set for 2nd career start vs. TEX, his former club
Yu Darvish takes the mound for his 2nd career start vs. his former club, the Texas Rangers, with the lone start vs. TEX coming on March 30, 2019 while with CHC…that 2019 start was 1 of 5 in his career he failed to make it out of the 3rd inning…he’s faced all 30 ML clubs, and the Orioles are the only other team he’s faced just once…besides BAL and TEX, he’s faced the all other 28 teams at least 4 times.

Darvish allows career-high-tying 4 HR vs. PIT
This past Mon vs. PIT, Darvish allowed 4 home runs in a contest for the 4th time in his career (3rd time in a regular season start)…it was his 10th career start vs. the Pirates, and he entered the contest quality in 5 of his 9 starts vs. the Bucs – the lowest WHIP (0.86) and highest SO/BB ratio (8.14) among all active hurlers who had made at least 9 starts vs. PIT.

Free passes
Darvish’s 8.4 walk rate is highest since his 8.1 walk rate in 2014 vs. TEX, and his 3.20 BB/9 IP ratio is his highest since 2018 w/ CHC (4.73), but he made just 8 starts that season… this season is his highest BB/9 IP ratio in a season with 22+ starts since his first 2 Major League seasons with TEX in ’12 (4.19) and ’13 (3.43)…the 50th percentile in walk rate is the lowest percentile he’s been in the Statcast era (since ’16).

Limit the long balls
After not allowing any HRs through his first 4 starts of the season, he has allowed 15 across his 14 most recent starts since April 30 vs. SF in Mexico City…among the 37 NL hurlers who have tossed at least 75.0 IP since April 30, his 1.75 HR/9 IP ratio is T-7th-highest in NL…he is 6-3 and the Padres are 6-4 in the 10 games he has allowed 0 HR…he is 1-4 when he allows 1+ HR, and the Padres are 2-6.

Making SD history with the punchouts
Darvish has strukout 504 batters through his first 78 games pitched with Padres, the most ever by any pitcher by this milepost for the franchise…among all hurlers in their first 78 app in franchise history, the next closest is Joe Musgrove (479 SO) and Jake Peavy (436).

Historic hit rate numbers
Yu Darvish has yielded a career-high 8.62 H/9 IP this seaso, but he owns the 3rd-lowest H/9 rate (7.32) among active MLB pitchers (min. 1,000 IP) behind only Clayton Kershaw (6.83) and Jacob deGrom (6.90)…Darvish’s 7.32 H/9 rate ranks 26th all-time in MLB (also min. 1,000 IP).
