MARLINS MINUTE
The Marlins tonight play the first game of a brief two-game set and road trip to St. Petersburg to face the Rays. Following this series, have an off day on Thursday before returning to action on Friday at home vs. Detroit as the team starts a seven-game homestand that also features Philadelphia.

  • The Marlins are off to their 3rd-best start to a season through the club’s first 101 games (54-47, .535). The only better starts came in 1997 (58-43, .574) and 2016 (55-46, .545).

Miami snapped an 8-game skid with a 3-2 walk-off win in 10 innings. 2B Luis Arraez (3×4) drove in the game winner with a bases-loaded single – his first career walk-off RBI. C Nick Fortes (2×3) recorded his first multi-hit game since July 3 and scored a run. LHP Jesus Luzardo held the Rockies to just 1 run in 7.0 innings of work while striking out a career-high 13, matching the most K’s by a Marlins left-hander in franchise history.

The Marlins have lost their last 9 road games, including an 0-6 trip their last time away from Miami, July 14-19, to Baltimore and St. Louis. The current slide is the team’s longest since a franchise-record 15 consecutive road losses from Aug. 3-Sept. 1, 2019.

Jupiter Hammerheads RHP Josh White was named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week for July 17-23. Selected by the Marlins in the 5th round of the 2022 Draft, White tossed 6.0 scoreless innings at Daytona on Wednesday, allowing just 2 hits while striking out 5.

NIKE RBI All-Stars claimed the Southeast Regional Championships in the Baseball Junior division and Softball division. The softball team is now back-to-back regional champs, and our juniors claimed their first regional championship since 2019. Both teams now advance to the MLB NIKE RBI World Series in Vero Beach, Fla at the Jackie Robinson Complex.

TAMPA BAY RAYS NOTES:

ON TO THE NEXT — Tampa Bay dropped Sunday’s series finale to Baltimore in a 5-3 final… RHP Taj Bradley did not factor into the decision after working 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk with six strikeouts…trailing 3-1 in the fifth inning, 1B Yandy Díaz (2-for-5, HR, 2RBI) tied the game with a two-run homer, but Baltimore responded with a solo homer from Ryan O’Hearn in the sixth inning and tacked on an insurance run in the seventh frame.

It marked the first time since 2017 that Tampa Bay lost a home series to Baltimore, dropping two of three games from 6/23-25; the Rays had been unbeaten in their last 16 home series against the Orioles (15-0-1).

Tampa Bay was held to three hits or fewer for the fourth time this season and for the first time since recording two hits on 6/17 at San Diego.

JUMBLED UP IN JULY—The Rays are 4-14 (.222) in July after entering the month with the league’s best record at 57-28 (.671)…it marks the worst record in the majors during that stretch, behind of Pittsburgh (5-14, .263), Arizona (5-13, .278) and Chicago-AL (5-12, .294)…Tampa Bay has not been shut out in July, but it has scored three or fewer runs 11 times, including five games with just one run.

In 18 games this month, Randy Arozarena is slashing .191/.233/.324 (13-for-68) with one double, one triple, 2 HR, 5 RBI and 21 strikeouts against four walks.

Wander Franco has also made 18 appearances in July and is slashing .182/.267/.303 (12-for-66) with two doubles, 2 HR, 7 RBI and 16 strikeouts against seven walks.

Josh Lowe is slashing .163/.229/.279 (7-for-43) with one triple, one HR, 3 RBI and 19 strikeouts against four walks across 14 July games.

Harold Ramírez has made 12 appearances this month and is slashing .194/.297/.226 (6-for-31) with one double and 2 RBI.

The Rays rank at the bottom of the AL during July in runs per game (3.39), batting average (.208), on-base pct. (.277) and OPS (.637)…the club record for lowest team batting average over a full calendar month is .222, done twice (Sept./Oct. 2020 & June 2012)…the 2020 Rays hit .215 in July, but played only seven games during
the month.

According to Elias, the lowest winning percentage in July for a team that entered the month leading their respective league (AL or NL) belongs to the 1995 Philadelphia Phillies, who posted a 9-20 (.310) July after entering the month at 38-21 (.644) during the strike-shortened 1995 campaign.

LET’S JUST REWIND — Prior to July, Tampa Bay hit .293 with runners in scoring position, the second-highest AVG in the majors behind Texas (.307)…in 18 games since, the Rays are batting .202 with RISP, the second-lowest AVG in the majors behind San Francisco (.172).

In 15 games since 7/5, Tampa Bay is 19-for-105 (.181) with seven extra-base hits (5 2B, 2 HR) with RISP.

NO JUICE AT THE TROP—Rays batters are slashing .202/.280/.324 in their last last 12 home games since 6/24, averaging 3.25 runs per game…in its previous 12 home games from 5/27-6/23, they slashed .286/.352/.460 and averaged 6.42 runs per game.

mULTI-HIT MACHINE—Yandy Díaz has 12 games with 3+ hits, tied with TOR Bo Bichette, LAA Shohei Ohtani and CLE Amed Rosario for the AL lead…his 31 multi-hit games overall are tied for sixth most in the AL.

Díaz is one of four players in Rays franchise history to have 12 games with 3+ hits through the club’s first 103 games, joining Randy Winn (14G in 2002), Carl Crawford (13G in 2004) and Julio Lugo (12G in 2005).

MARLIN MASHERS — In 13 games against Miami, Yandy Díaz is batting .364 (16-for-44) with four doubles, 7 RBI and nine runs scored.

Wander Franco is 5-for-16 (.313) with four doubles and one triple in four games opposite Miami.

In 31 matchups against the Marlins, Manuel Margot is slashing .313/.377/.490 (30-for-96) with five doubles, three triples, 2 HR, 7 RBI and 10 walks against 10 strikeouts.

Harold Ramírez has hit safely in each of his four games against Miami, going 8-for-18 (.444) with two doubles, 2 HR and 5 RBI.

WHAT A RELIEF — Tampa Bay relievers have posted a 3.01 ERA (182.1IP, 61ER) since the beginning of June, the best mark in the AL and second best in the majors behind Atlanta (2.80) during that time.

INTERLEAGUE TALK — Tampa Bay is 18-15 (.545) in Interleague play…the Rays went 9-1 against NL clubs to begin the season, outscoring opponents 65-27 (+38) while pitching to a 2.43 ERA (89.0IP, 24ER)…Tampa Bay has gone 9-14 (.391) in 23 games since, posting a +1 run differential (93-92) while recording a 3.63 ERA (203.1IP, 82ER).

The Rays are 5-7 (.417) against the NL East…Tampa Bay won each of its first four games against the division from 4/3-5/16, then dropped seven straight games
from 5/17-7/8…they ended the seven-game skid with a 10-4 victory over Atlanta in the final game before the All-Star break.

POWER SURGE — Jose Siri’s 18 homers since the beginning of May are third most in the AL in that stretch, behind LAA Shohei Ohtani (29HR) and CWS Luis Robert Jr. (23HR), and are tied for 10th most in the majors.

Among players with 200 at-bats, only Ohtani (10.31) has a better AB/HR ratio than Siri’s 11.00.

Despite his home run production, Siri’s 40.9% whiff rate and 34.2% strikeout rate rank in the bottom first and third percentile among MLB batters, respectively.

FIGHTING THE FISH — Tampa Bay and Miami kick off a two-game set tonight at Tropicana Field…the Rays swept the four-game season series with the Marlins in 2022, taking two games at Tropicana Field from 5/24-25 and two at LoanDepot Park from 8/30-31.

Tampa Bay has won six straight home games over Miami dating back to 9/6/20 and taken 10 of 11 from the Marlins at Tropicana Field since 7/22/18…it the longest home winning streak against Miami in club history.

The Rays are 29-11 (.725) against the Marlins since manager Kevin Cash took over in 2015…it is the second-best winning pct. by any club against Miami during that
stretch, trailing only Toronto (13-4, .765).

The Rays are 18-2 against the Marlins dating back to 5/14/19, outscoring Miami 101-58 (+43) during that time…during the 20-game stretch, Rays pitching has posted a 2.54 ERA (181.0IP, 51ER), while Tampa Bay batters have produced a .258/.332/.451 line with 41 doubles, four triples, 27 HR and 98 RBI.

TONIGHT’S STARTER: RHP TYLER GLASNOW (3-3, 3.62)
TONIGHT’S START — The right-hander makes his 11th start of the season and his seventh at home…is searching for his first win at Tropicana Field since 6/9 vs. Texas…has a 2.04 ERA (17.2IP, 4ER) and 0.79 WHIP over his last three home starts since 6/25…has received only 2.41 runs of support per 9.0 IP in his last six starts, the fourth-lowest mark in the AL (min. 35.0IP) in that span (since 6/14)…enters the outing just four strikeouts shy of 600 career punchouts.

LAST TIME OUT — Twirled a season-high 7.0 innings, but did not factor into the decision of Tampa Bay’s 4-3 loss vs. Baltimore on 7/20 (7.0IP, 6H, 3R, 2ER, 9SO)…went nine up, nine down the first time through the order, but all three of his runs allowed came in the fourth frame…it marked his first walk-free start this season, and his second career start with 9+ strikeouts and zero walks (also: 8/7/18 vs. BAL – 9SO, 0BB).

GONE FISHING — In three career starts opposite the Marlins, Glasnow is 0-1 with a 5.28 ERA (15.1IP, 9ER), 16 strikeouts and three walks…he allowed nine runs in 9.1 innings across his first two career outings against Miami (6/9/17 & 9/6/20), but tossed 6.0 shutout frames in his most recent start on 4/1/21 at LoanDepot Park (6.0IP, 1H, 6SO).

Over his last seven starts against NL East clubs since the beginning of 2020, Glasnow is 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA (42.0IP, 10ER), holding opponents to a .149/.197/.297 (22-for-148) line with 61 strikeouts (13.07 SO/9.0IP).

INTERLEAGUE INTEL — This marks his third Interleague start of the campaign — he has pitched to a 3.60 ERA (10.0IP, 4ER) between home starts against Los Angeles-NL (5/27) and Atlanta (7/7)…is 3-1 with a 2.24 ERA (52.1IP, 13ER) and a 0.78 WHIP in nine Interleague starts since his Rays debut on 8/1/18, marking the lowest WHIP and third-lowest ERA by any AL pitcher against NL opponents in that span (min. 50.0IP), behind TOR Kevin Gausman (1.86) and teammate Shane McClanahan (1.97).

The Rays are 7-2 in Glasnow’s Interleague starts, winning seven straight from 4/5/19-6/8/21 before dropping each of his two outings this season.

HEATING UP — Glasnow is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA (13.0IP, 3ER), 16 strikeouts and only two walks in two starts since the All-Star break…it marks the AL’s ninth-lowest post-All-Star break ERA (min. 10.0IP).

He has traditionally been at his best in the second half of the season, pitching to a 4.07 ERA in 75 career games (43GS) before the All-Star break compared to a 3.61 ERA in 30 outings (23GS) after the break.

STRIKEOUT ARTIST — Since making his season debut on 5/27, Glasnow has 80 strikeouts across 54.2 innings (13.17 SO/9.0IP)…his 80 strikeouts in that span are third most in the majors, trailing only ATL Spencer Strider (92) and SD Blake Snell (89)…he paces the AL in both strikeouts per 9.0 IP and strikeout rate (34.9%) in that timeframe (min. 50.0IP).

This marks the fourth instance of a Rays pitcher recording 80+ strikeouts through their first 10 starts of a season, including the third time for Glasnow (also: 83SO in 2020, 87SO in 2021)…the other Ray to accomplish the feat was Shane McClanahan (81SO in 2022).

Glasnow has fanned 6+ batters in each of his 10 starts, the longest streak to open a season in Rays history…including his final start of 2022, he has recorded 6+ SO in 11 straight starts, the third-longest streak in club history behind his own 17-start streak from 8/13/20- 5/14/21 and a 13-start run by McClanahan from 5/11-7/26, 2022.

Glasnow has a combined 47.4 pct. whiff rate on his breaking pitches (slider/curveball), the highest mark in the AL (min. 250 pitches swung at) and fourth highest in MLB behind Strider (57.0%), Snell (55.3%) and MIA Jesús Luzardo (52.1%).

LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT — Right-handed batters are hitting just .174 (16-for-92) with a .523 OPS and 6 XBH against him, the lowest opp. OPS and second-lowest opp. AVG against righties among AL starters (min. 100BF) behind BOS James Paxton (.171)…lefties have seen greater success against Glasnow, posting a .265 (31-for-117) AVG with 15 XBH (6HR) and an .838 OPS (.513 SLG).

LOCKED IN LATE — From the fifth inning on, Glasnow has a 1.70 ERA (14.2IP, 2ER) while holding opponents to a .170/.279/.264 (9-for-53) clip…in innings 1-4, he has a 4.50 ERA (40.0IP, 20ER) while yielding a .243/.292/.462 (38-for-156) slash line.
