LOS ANGELES ANGELS NOTES:

LEADING OFF: Today, the Angels play the first of nine games on a road trip against the Detroit Tigers (July 25- 27), Toronto Blue Jays (July 28-30) and Atlanta Braves (July 31-Aug. 2)…Halos went 6-3 on last homestand against the Astros (1-2), Yankees (3-0) and Pirates (2- 1)…LAA was 0-5 on last road trip against the Padres (0-3) and Dodgers (0-2) just prior to All-Star Break.

HOME RUN LEADERS: Angels lead the American League and rank third in the Majors with 155 home runs this season.

LEAGUE LEADER: As a hitter, Shohei Ohtani leads the Majors in triples (7), home runs (36), total bases (250), XBH (59), slugging percentage (.674) and OPS (1.072)… On the mound, he also leads the Majors in opponent batting average (.195) and is fourth in strikeouts (148).

THE MICK: Mickey Moniak is currently on a career-high 14-game hit streak and is batting .379 (22/58) during that span (since July 2)…The streak is also the longest active hit streak in the Majors and the second-longest by an Angels player this year (Shohei Ohtani had a 15- game hit streak from June 3-18).

VS. DETROIT: This series in Detroit marks the first meetings of 2023 between the Angels and Tigers… Last year, the season series was split 3-3…Since 2011,
Angels are 49-27 (.645) against the Tigers and have won or split every season series in that span.

BACK ON THE ROAD: Angels are looking to snap a season-high six game road losing streak today…Seeking first road victory since June 24 at Colorado.

RECORD SETTING PACE: Shohei Ohtani has tied his own Angels record from the 2021 season, with 36 home runs through the first 100 team games of a season (Ohtani had 37 HR through 101 team games in 2021).

ELITE COMPANY: Shohei Ohtani is one three players since 1901 to have 36+ HR and 7+ triples through 100 team games in a season…The only others to do so are Babe Ruth (1920, 1921 & 1928) & Jimmie Foxx (1932).

FROM BOTH SIDES: On Sunday vs. Pittsburgh, Luis Rengifo posted his third career multi-HR game and homered from both sides of the plate in the same game for the second time in his career (he also did so on Sept. 16, 2022)…Prior to Rengifo, no Angels switchhitter had homered from both sides of the plate in a game since Kendrys Morales on July 30, 2012 at Texas.

LATE COMEBACKS: Halos have four wins this season when trailing after eight innings, which is the highest total for the Club since 2017, when the Angels had five wins when trailing after eight frames.

ON THE HILL: Today’s starting pitcher, Griffin Canning is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA (11.1 IP – 2 ER) in two career games vs. Detroit…Today is his first time facing the Tigers since his rookie season in 2019…He earned his first career win in his first career road game on May 7, 2019 at Comerica Park.

THE INJURED LIST: Angels currently have 16 players on the injured list and have used the IL a total of 25 times this year for 23 different players…The 16 players currently on the IL are the most in the Majors.

DETROIT TIGERS NOTES:

SKUBAL DOMINATES IN TIGERS WIN OVER GIANTS: The Tigers defeated the Giants, 5-1, on Monday at Comerica Park. Tarik Skubal started and was impressive, throwing 5.0 shutout innings with two hits allowed, no walks and nine strikeouts to earn his first win since July 21, 2022. Tyler Holton struck out two in 1.1 perfect innings of relief, while Jason Foley worked a scoreless ninth, giving up one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Offensively, Riley Greene had three hits, including a double, while Kerry Carpenter went 2×4 with two RBI. Spencer Torkelson added two hits and a RBI and Zack Short hit a two-run homer, his fifth of the season.

GREENE DAY: Riley Greene posted his seventh three-hit game of the season yesterday against the Giants, going 3×4 with a double. Greene has hit safely in 35 of his last 43 games, over which he is batting .356/.423/.528 with 11 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 16 RBI. Among American League players with at least 250 plate appearances this season, Greene ranks fifth with a .309 batting average and eighth with a .375 on-base percentage.

JAKE RAKES: Jake Rogers went 2×3 with a run scored yesterday to extend his hitting streak to a career-best eight games. Among American League catchers with at least 200 plate appearances, Rogers ranks fourth in slugging percentage (.438) and fWAR (1.9), while he is fifth in OPS (.739) and tied for sixth in wRC+ (104).

START ME UP: Tarik Skubal pitched 5.0 shutout innings yesterday against the Giants, continuing an impressive stretch from Detroit’s starting rotation. Since July 8, Tigers starting pitchers have combined for a 2.47 ERA (69.1IP/19ER), which leads the Majors in that span. Detroit also ranks first in WHIP (0.94), FIP (2.94) and opponent batting average (.180).

HOLTON PUTTING UP ZEROS: Tyler Holton worked a scoreless 1.1 innings with two strikeouts yesterday. Since June 4, Holton has not allowed an earned run in 17 of his last 19 outings, posting a 0.73 ERA (24.2IP/2ER) and 27 strikeouts. For the season, he ranks fourth among American League relievers (min. 40.0 innings) with a 1.73 ERA and 0.92 WHIP and fifth with a .185 opponent batting average.

AT COMERICA PARK: The Tigers are 2-2 on their current seven-game homestand, which includes three games vs. San Diego (1-2), one game vs. San Francisco (1-0) and three games vs. Los Angeles (AL) (July 25-27). Detroit is 22-27 at Comerica Park this season. As a team, the Tigers are hitting .243/.310/.378 at home, while the pitching staff has a 4.56 ERA (450.0IP/228ER).

TIGERS AND ANGELS: The Tigers and Angels begin their six-game season series tonight. Along with the three games this week in Detroit, the two teams will also play a three-game set in Anaheim from September 15-17. Detroit and Los Angeles (AL) split six games last season, including the Tigers winning two-of-three games at Comerica Park.

  • Has faced the Angels five times in his career and has a 2-2 record with a 5.84 ERA (24.2IP/16ER) and 19 strikeouts…in 18 career starts at Comerica Park, he has an 8-6 record with a 3.27 ERA (99.0IP/36ER) and 98 strikeouts.
  • Among American League pitchers with at least 80.0 innings pitched, he ranks first in ERA (2.69) and WHIP (0.97), fourth in opponent batting average (.207) and fifth in FIP (3.10).
