The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed the following players from the 2023 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was
made by Joe DelliCarri, Pirates Senior Director of Amateur Scouting.
Hunter Furtado LHP
Went 1-1 with a 4.75 ERA (36.0ip/19er) and 38 strikeouts in 17 appearances (two starts) in 2023 with the University of
Alabama… Tossed a season-high 5.0 scoreless innings in a win over Kentucky on May 23, 2023 in the opening round of the SEC Tournament…Ranked third among Alabama relievers with 27.0 innings pitched in 2023…Struck out 71 batters across 68.0 innings in two seasons at Alabama after transferfing from Wake Forest…Was rated seventh among left-handed pitchers and 61st among all players in Florida by Prep Baseball Report…Recorded an 0.37 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 19.0 innings at The King’s (FL) Academy during a pandemic-shortened 2020 season…Was coached by former MLB players Brad Wilkerson and Jarrod Saltalamacchia during his high school career…His father, David, played basketball at the University of North Florida and Palm Beach Atlantic University…His mother, Ashlei, played volleyball and tennis at Palm Beach Atlantic University…His sister, Madeline, plays volleyball at Tennessee Tech University…Was signed by Pirates scout Darren Mazeroski

Went 3-3 with a 5.77 ERA (48.1ip/31er) and 62 strikeouts in 10 appearances (10 starts) in 2023 with the University of
Georgia…Struck out a career-high-tying 11 batters in 7.0 innings against No. 14 South Carolina on March 18, 2023 (also
punched out 11 Princeton hitters over 4.2 innings of work in a February 24, 2023 victory)…Earned an invitation to the USA
Baseball Collegiate National Team summer training camp following the 2022 season…Was named second-team Freshman All-American by Perfect Game and Rawlings and to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team by conference coaches after his inaugural campaign in 2021…Struck out 53 batters and held opposing hitters to a .179 average in 53.0 innings of work across 17 appearances (four starts) in 2021…Went 8-5 with a 4.97 ERA (155.2ip/86er), 195 strikeouts and a .213 batting average against in three seasons at Georgia…Posted a 9-2 record and a 1.18 ERA in 58.0 innings of work during his junior season at Houston County (GA) High School in 2019…Was signed by Pirates scout Cam Murphy.
Garret McMillan RHP
Went 4-2 with a 4.89 ERA (42.1ip/23er) and 36 strikeouts in 10 apperances (nine starts) as a senior in 2023 at the University of Alabama…Went 4-5 with a 4.29 ERA (86.0ip/41er) and 83 strikeouts in 16 starts in 2022 for the Crimson Tide…Began his collegiate career at Shelton State (AL) Community College, where he helped the team capture the 2021 Alabama Community College Conference Championship…Was rated as the No. 19 righthander and No. 57 player in the state of Alabama by Prep Baseball Report in 2019…Was previously selected by Minnesota in the 19th round of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft, but did not sign…Was signed by Pirates scout Darren Mazeroski.
