Pirates sign four players from 2023 Draft

The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed the following players from the 2023 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Joe DelliCarri, Pirates Senior Director of Amateur Scouting.

Name: Mitch Jebb
Position: SS
Height/Weight: 6-1/185
School: Michigan State University
Affiliate Assignment: Florida Complex League

Was rated by MLB Pipeline as the No. 44 prospect in the draft entering the 2023 season…. Became Michigan State’s first selection by the Pirates since Cam Vieaux was selected in the sixth round of the 2016 draft. Became Michigan State’s highest draft selection since Mark Mulder was the No. 2 overall pick in the first round in the 1998 draft. Took home third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2023 while making 50 starts at shortstop for the Spartans. Ranked third in the Big Ten in batting average (.337) in 2023 while also recording 15 doubles, seven triples, one home run, 36 RBI, 14 stolen bases and a .438 OBP in 50 games. Was selected to the West Division All-Star team for the 2022 Cape Cod League All-Star Game while playing for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Finished the summer of 2022 ranked No. 3 on Baseball America’s top 50 Cape Cod League Prospects list…Took home third-team All-Big Ten Conference honors as a freshman in 2021. Was selected as the John Kobs Most Valuable Player Award recipient as well as the Kirk Gibson Offensive Player-of-the-Year for Michigan State’s team awards as a sophomore in 2022…Led Michigan State while also finishing tied for eighth in the Big Ten with a .356 average in 2022… Was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team after posting a .276 average in 2021. Was signed by Pirates scout Anthony Wycklendt.

Was rated 196th by MLB Pipeline among the top 250 draft prospects. Became the first player from WVU to be drafted by the Pirates since pitcher Kim West in 1972. Became the highest-drafted Mountaineer since Alek Manoah was selected 11th overall by the Blue Jays in 2019…Was an All-Big 12 first-team selection in 2023. Went 2-1 with seven saves, a 2.61 ERA (38.0ip/11er) and 60 strikeouts in 25 appearances in 2023. Made three appearances (three starts) for the West Virginia Black Bears and Trenton Thunder in 2023 in the MLB Draft League. Was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper-of-the-Year Award watch list in 2023. Was West Virginia’s Opening Day starter in 2022 on February 18 against Central Michigan. Was signed by Pirates scout Dan Radcliff.

Went 7-0 with an 0.67 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 42.0 innings as a junior at Christian Brothers (NJ) Academy. Was signed by Pirates scout Michael Bradford.

Name: Landon Tomkins
Position: RHP

School: Louisiana Tech Univ.
Affiliate Assignment: Florida Complex League

Went 6-2 with a 3.52 ERA (76.2ip/30er), 75 strikeouts and .233 batting average against in 30 appearances (six starts) in 2023 for Louisiana Tech…Became the first player drafted by the Pirates out of Louisiana Tech since Mike Jefferson in 2011… Went 13-4 with a 3.94 ERA (132.1ip/58er) and 132 strikeouts in 74 appearances (six starts) during his three-year career at Louisiana Tech…Began his collegiate career at Hinds (MS) Community College, where he finished with a 1.71 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 21.0 innings in two seasons. Was signed by Pirates scout John Lombardo.
