MLS Preview: Austin FC (8-8-5) at Vancouver Whitecaps FC (6-7-7)

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC have lost only one of their five meetings with Austin FC (W3 D1), including winning both of the meetings in Vancouver. Austin FC’s lone win was a 3-0 home victory in April 2022 while the Vancouver Whitecaps FC have outscored the Austin FC Verde, 6-2, in the other four meetings.

For the third time this season, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC lost an MLS match that it had led at halftime with a 3-2 defeat to the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday. The three losses when leading at the half are the most of any MLS team this season and are also the most in a single season by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in their MLS history.

Austin FC is coming off a 4-1 road win over the Minnesota United FC, Austin FC’s most goals scored in a road match in club history (any competition). It was also the Austin FC Verde’s first road win by multiple goals since a 2-0 victory at Sporting Kansas City in July of last season.

Ryan Gauld had a goal and an assist against the Seattle Sounders FC for the Scotsman’s sixth the MLS game with at least one of each. the only Vancouver Whitecaps FC player with more such games in MLS play for the team are Fredy Montero, Camilo Sanvezzo and Yordy Reyna, each of whom has seven games with a goal and assist.

Sebastian Driussi notched a brace in Saturday’s win, his fourth multi-goal game in the regular season for Austin FC. That breaks a tie with Cecilio Dominguez for the most multi-goal games in Austin FC’s team history.
