MLS Preview: Vancouver Whitecaps FC (6-5-7) at Sporting Kansas City (5-10-6)

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Sporting Kansas City played to a 1-1 draw at BC Place on June 3 with a Ryan Gauld penalty in the 88th minute cancelling out a first-half strike by Alan Pulido. Sporting Kansas City recorded an expected goals value of 0.88 in its 1-0 loss to the Chicago Fire on Saturday despite attempting 13 shots in the match. It marked the eighth time this season that Sporting Kansas City had an expected goals value under 1.0 despite taking more than 10 shots, the most such games in MLS in 2023.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC snapped a 15-match winless run on the road in MLS play with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Football Club FC on Saturday, their first road win in over a year (2-0 at FC Dallas on June 18, 2022). The Vancouver Whitecaps FC haven’t won consecutive road MLS games in a single season since August 2018 at the Portland Timbers and San Jose Earthquakes.

Only Damir Kreilach and Raul Ruidiaz (6 each) have scored more against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC since Pulido joined MLS in 2020.

Ryan Gauld has scored in four straight MLS matches, equaling the second-longest scoring goal-scoring streak in the Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s history. Only Camilo Sanvezzo, who scored in five straight games in June-July 2013, has scored in more consecutive MLS games for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
