SAN DIEGO PADRES NOTES:

Padres relinquish lead for 2nd straight game, lose 4-3 to Giants

  • The Friars dropped their 2nd straight game to the Giants… in his return from the 15-Day IL, starter Seth Lugo went 5.0 innings with 1 run allowed on 3 hits…he punched out 5 Giants with 1 walk allowed.
  • Fernando Tatis Jr. went 3-for-5 with a HR, 2 runs scored, and 6 total bases…Ha-Seong Kim was thrown out attempting to steal, and thus, the Padres snapped an 8-game streak with at least 1 SB (their longest streak since ’13).
  • Nick Martinez was saddled with the loss and the blown save after allowing 2 runs on and a walk on 1 hit in his 1.2 innings… Josh Hader pitched 0.1 inning in the 9th, and he walked 2 batters, including a game-ending walk of Joc Pederson.

Roster Moves

  • Today, the Padres optioned RHP Drew Carlton to Triple-A El Paso and recalled LHP Adrian Morejon from El Paso…additionally, RHP Angel Felipe was claimed off waivers by the Oakland A’s.

Extra-inning & 1-run losses

  • The night after losing their 6th extra-inning game (0-6 in 2023 in extras), SD lost their 13th 1-run game of the year…San Diego’s 5-13 record (.278) in 1-run games is the worst in all of baseball in 2023.
  • In 2022, the Padres had a Major League-best 30-17 record (.638) in 1-run games, and they went 12-5 in extra-inning contests.

Padres ‘pen

  • The Padres bullpen entered this series with the lowest WHIP in baseball at 1.16, the 2nd-fewest baserunners allowed (303), the 2nd-lowest Opp. AVG (.219), and the 3rd-lowest ERA at 3.21.
  • In these 2 games vs, the Giants, they’ve allowed 8 runs (7 ER) on 7 hits and 9 BB in a total of 7.0 IP…it’s just the 4th time this season in which the SD ‘pen has allowed 7-or-more ER in any 2-game span.

In the 7th inning or later…

  • The Padres have the 2nd-fewest XBH and the 2nd-fewest runs scored in MLB in the 7th inning or later (47 XBH and 81 runs scored) ahead of just the A’s (46 XBH and then the Pirates’ 77 runs scored)…the Giants, meanwhile, lead all of baseball in XBH hits & runs scored in the 7th and on (83 XBH, 137 runs).

Tatis having a June

  • Fernando Tatis Jr. leads the National League this month in OPS with a 1.302 mark, and he ranks 2nd overall behind Shohei Ohtani (1.360)…Tatis has hit .400 in June (28-for-70) with a Major League leading 17 extra-base hits (11 doubles and 6 homers)…he’s also drawn 10
    walks and logged 16 RBI.
  • The most RBI he’s had in a month were 26 RBI in May of 2021, the most hits he’s had were 36 hits in August of 2020, and the most XBH he’s had were his 18 XBH in August of 2020…the Padres’ record for most XBH in a month are held by Greg Vaughn (21 XBH in May, 1998) and Wil Myers (21 in June, 2016).

STARTER – YU DARVISH 11
Darvish makes 2nd start of season vs.

SF, this time in the USA
Yu Darvish takes the mound for his 14th start of the season and his 2nd vs. SF, having faced the Giants in his 4th start of the campaign on April 30 in Mexico City…he did not factor into SD’s 6-4 win, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits with 3 HR allowed at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium’s 7,349 feet of elevation…in his lone start at Oracle Park last season on April 12, 2022, he turned in the shortest outing of his career (1.2 IP) and allowed the 2nd-most ER of his career (9)… among all marks he’s made at least 2 starts in, his 10.13 ERA at Oracle is his highest at any stadium in the Majors, with the next closest being the Oakland Coliseum (5.88 ERA in 6 career starts at the Coliseum).

Darvish tagged with 5th loss of season vs. TB
Darvish entered last Friday’s tilt vs. TB in search of his 3rd consecutive win of the season against the team he had not only his lowest career ERA against (1.54) in 6 career starts, but the 2nd-lowest all-time ERA among pitchers with at least 5 career starts vs. TB…he went on to allow the 2nd-most runs (6) and hits (8) of the season, and now has a 2.54 ERA vs. TB.

Limit the long balls, especially vs. SF
After not allowing any HRs through his first 4 starts of the season, he has allowed 10 across his last 9 starts since April 30 vs. SF in Mexico City…his 1.80 HR/9 IP ratio is 13th-highest in the Majors and 8th-highest in the NL (min. 40 IP) since April 30…he’s allowed 3+ HR 13 times in his career, and 3 of those outings have been vs. SF…the only 2 times he’s allowed 4 HR in a game also came vs. SF (August 21, 2019 and Sept. 13, 2021).

Darvish hits the century mark with 100 career wins
On Fri, June 9 @ COL, Darvish became the 7th player to win their 100th career game in a SD uniform, and the first since Shawn Estes in 2008…the others are Rollie Fingers in 1980, Goose Gossage in 1986, Ed Whitson in 1989, Bruce Hurst in 1989 and Eric Show in 1990.

5.0+ IP streak snapped at 37 straight starts
Darvish has tossed at least 5.0 innings in 40 of his last 41 starts dating back to April 17, 2022, a streak that began after his last start here at Oracle Park (career-low 1.2 IP)…in his first start vs. the Yankees since 2017 on Sunday, May 28, Darvish’s 2.2 IP tied for the 2nd-shortest outing of his career, and it snapped his streak of 37 consecutive starts tossing at least 5.0 IP, the 2nd-longest streak in Padres history behind only Bruce Hurst’s 43 straight games with at least 5.0 IP across the 1990-91 seasons…it’s tied for the 3rd-longest such streak in the Majors since 2020 with Gerrit Cole’s current streak since June 14, 2022, trailing only Max Fried’s 50 straight starts (June 6, 2021-Sept. 30, 2022) and Alek Manoah’s 39 straight starts (August 23, 2021-Sept. 30, 2022).

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS NOTES:

TODAY’S GAME: The Giants and Padres play the third game of this four-game series tonight at Oracle Park with the Giants entering the matchup on a nine-game winning streak dating to June 11…it’s SF’s longest winning streak since a nine-game winning streak from September 5-14, 2021…the Giants nine-game winning streak is the second-longest active win streak in the Majors currently behind Cincinnati’s active 10-gamer… for reference, SF’s last 10-game win streak came from May 20-31, 2004.

FLOAT ON…: SF has won nine in a row, and 24 of its last 33 games (.727) dating to May 15…the .727 winning percentage is the best in MLB over that stretch…during this nine-game winning streak, the Giants have a +47 run differential (76-29).

TRYING TO HANG TEN (IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE): In addition to looking for a 10th straight victory tonight the Giants are also aiming to reach 10 games over .500 for the first time this year, which would match the highwater mark of last year’s club, done on June 18, 2022 when they were 37-27.

BREAKING LATE…: The Giants scored three of their four runs in last night’s win after the 7th inning (one apiece in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings)…entering play today, the Giants have scored 137 runs in the 7th inning or later this year, most in the Majors ahead of the Dodgers (132) and D-Backs (127).

NEVER TELL US THE ODDS: In the last 14 days, the Giants have seven wins in which their win probability was less than 23% at any point in the game…in four of those seven wins, it was less than 14%

CRAW, HE’S SO HOT RIGHT NOW…: IF Brandon Crawford singled in a run in the seventh inning to salvage an inning where SF had gone from bases loaded no outs to two on and two out…Crawford is 8-for-his-last-11 with runners in scoring position this month with eight RBI…on the year, Crawford’s .415 (17-for-41) clip w/RISP is sixth-best in the Majors (min. 40 at-bats w/RISP)…even better, with RISP and two outs, Crawford is 8-for-20 (.400).

LIKE A JOC…: DH Joc Pederson tied the game last night with this 8th inning homer before winning it in the 9th inning with his walk-off walk…SF is 24-15 this year when Pederson plays in a game…when he hasn’t (whether it’s been due to injury or just not playing that day), the Giants are 17-17.

ICE, ICE, BABY : SF has a .784 OPS this season in late and close situations, third-best in the Majors behind the D-Backs (.826) and Orioles (.785)…the Giants .254 average in late and close situations is fourth-best in the Majors entering play today.

THEY’RE JUST THE OPENERS…: The Giants have used an opener 10 different times this season with tonight’s outing by RHP Ryan Walker being the 11th time they’ve done it this season…in the previous 10 instances, SF is 7-3 with a 2.93 team ERA in those games (30er, 92.0ip) while allowing 34 runs overall (3.4 runs/game)…RHP John Brebbia (who is currently on the IL) has started eight of those prior 10…the other two to do so have been LHP Scott Alexander (also currently on the IL), who did it once, and Walker, who did so in Game 1 of this series.

THE ROOKS: Using Fangraphs WAR, SF’s rookies this year have been worth 2.0 Wins Above Replacement as we enter play today…much of that has come on the offensive side of the ball where the Giants rookies have been worth 1.7 fWAR, eighth-most in the Majors…the rookie hurlers have been worth 0.3 fWAR to this point…in terms of defense, the Giants rookie class ranks seventh in terms of Fangraphs’ Defensive Runs Above Average Metric (Def) at 9.5, which measures a player’s defensive value relative to league average.

IN PLAY (RUNS): OF Luis Matos has scored nine runs in his first six Major League games entering play tonight…that’s tied for the most by any Giant in his first nine career games with Willie McCovey, who also did so in his first six games in 1959.

BULLS ON PARADE: The SF bullpen has been one of the best in MLB over the last month…since May 22, Giants relievers are 11-2 with an MLB-best 1.72 ERA (25er, 130.1ip), 146 strikeouts 12 saves and 0.87 WHIP…the Giants ‘pen has allowed six homers in that stretch, tied for third-fewest in the Majors.
