PITTSBURGH PIRATES NOTES:

THE PIRATES: Have lost five straight and six of their last seven games…Have had four separate winning streaks of at least four games this season, including a season-high seven-game winning streak from 4/17-23…Come into today in third place and 1.5 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central.

ROSTER MOVE: The Pittsburgh Pirates today placed left-handed pitcher Jose Hernandez on the 15-day injured list with a right calf strain…Left-handed pitcher Ryan Borucki had his contract selected from Triple-A Indianapolis and will be active for today’s game…Borucki will wear uniform No. 43…Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster is now full.

THE BOOK ON BORUCKI: The Pirates signed Ryan Borucki as a minor league free agent on May 9 after he elected free agency from the Cubs on May 7…Borucki began the season with Triple-A Iowa before having his contract selected by Chicago on April 30…He was then designated for assignment on May 2 without appearing in a game for the Cubs…The 29-year-old lefthander scattered three hits over 8.1 scoreless innings in eight relief appearances with Indianapolis…He has made each of his last 77 appearances in the big leagues in relief since making a combined 19 starts in 2018-19 while pitching for Toronto.

ABOUT TODAY’S STARTER: Luis Ortiz will make his second start of the road trip and his seventh of this season in the finale of this six-game road trip…Ortiz was charged with a loss in his last start Tuesday night at Wrigley Field in the team’s 11-3 setback…He earned the first win of his big league career on May 22 against the Rangers when he allowed two runs in a career-high 7.2 innings.

LAYOVER IN PITTSBURGH: Tomorrow night the Pirates will begin a three-game homestand against the Cubs…The Pirates will then return to the
road for a four-game series Thursday at Miami that will conclude a stretch of 10 of 13 games away from PNC Park.

FATHER’S DAY: This Father’s Day, Major League Baseball will once again champion to “Keep Dad in The Game” by dedicating this Father’s Day to the fight against prostate cancer…The on-field highlights includes one-of-a-kind, specially designed blue-themed caps by New Era worn by all players, managers, coaches and other on-field personnel…On-field personnel may wear blue wristbands and will wear the symbolic blue-ribbon decals on Nike jerseys….There will also be commemorative base jewels and lineup cards.

A PROMOTION IS IN ORDER: Yesterday 20-year-old Anthony Solometo was promoted from High-A Greensboro to Double-A Altoona (he struck out seven batters while allowing four runs in 5.0 innings in his Curve debut last night)…Solometo allowed one unearned run in 22.0 innings in his last four starts with Greensboro…At the time of his promotion, he ranked fourth in the South Atlantic League in ERA (2.30), tied for eighth in strikeouts (68), tied for fifth in batting average against (.207) and ninth in WHIP (1.16)

CARLOS SANTANA’S HITS: Carlos Santana singled in each of his final two at-bats on Saturday and is now 6-for-15 in his last four games…Santana’s 1586 hits are the most among all active switch hitters.

WHAT’S BREWING: The Bucs and BrewCrew will face each other again later this month at PNC Park with a three-game series beginning on June 30…The Pirates will return to Milwaukee for a final time for a four-game road trip from August 3-6.

DAURI DEALING: Dauri Moreta tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in his last outing on Friday… Since May 1, Moreta has an 0.45 ERA (20.0ip/1er), 27 strikeouts and .134 batting average against in 19 appearances…Moreta’s 0.45 ERA since May 1 is the lowest among all relievers in MLB with at least 20.0 innings pitched.

STARTING PITCHER – 48 – RHP LUIS ORTIZ
LUIS ORTIZ: The 24-year-old righthander will be making his eighth appearance (seventh start) of the season this afternoon…He allowed four runs in 5.1 innings while losing an 11-3 decision against Jameson Taillon in his last start Tuesday at Wrigley Field…He earned his first big league win in his start on 5/22 vs. Texas after allowing two runs in 7.2 innings of work.

vs. MILWAUKEE: Has never faced the Brewers.
