A’s Recall RHP Smith from Las Vegas; Place LHP Lovelady on 15-day IL

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s recalled right-handed pitcher Chad Smith from Triple-A Las Vegas and placed left-handed pitcher Richard Lovelady on the 15-day injured list with a strained left elbow, the club announced today.

Smith joins the A’s for the second time this year after going 1-1 with a 6.30 ERA and .807 opponents OPS in eight relief appearances during his first stint from April 12 to 27. He walked five and struck out six in 10.0 innings. The 28-year-old right-hander is 0-1 with a 10.26 ERA and .987 opponents OPS in 15 relief appearances with Las Vegas, including a 12.79 ERA in 12 games following his April 28 option from Oakland. He has a .343 opponents batting average overall and has walked 17 while striking out 22 in 16.2 innings at Triple-A.

Lovelady was claimed off waivers from Atlanta on April 13 and was 0-3 with a 3.86 ERA and .602 opponents OPS in 24 relief appearances with the A’s. He allowed just 2-of-13 (15.4%) inherited runners to score and first batters faced were 3-for-20 with two walks and a hit by pitch. Lovelady had a .157 opponents batting average but walked 10 and struck out 20 in 21.0 innings.
