TORONTO BLUE JAYS NOTES:

THE LATEST: The Blue Jays were doubled up by the Orioles yesterday, 4-2, in the final game of their three-game set at Camden Yards…Dropped to an even 11-11 in series finales and 4-3 in rubber games this season… Are now 13-9-0 in series play this year and 6-6-0 on the road. Toronto has still gone 9-5 over its last 14 games and 12-7 over the last 19…Can improve to 13-10 in series openers with a win tonight.

JANO-BOMB (X2): Danny Jansen went deep twice yesterday, blasting solo shots in the 3rd and 5th innings off Orioles starter Tyler Wells…Marked his 2nd multi-HR game of the season (also: April 25 vs. CWS) and the 6th of his career…His six multi-homer games as a catcher trail only J.P. Arencibia (7) for the most in Blue Jays history…Is the only Toronto batter with multiple home runs in a game this season…Six of his eight longballs this year have come against AL East opponents. The Elmhurst, IL, native also picked up a single in the 7th inning, finishing the day 3-for-4, his 3rd three-hit effort of the year…Over his last 17 games, has gone 17-for-62 (.274) with five doubles, five homers, and 15 RBI for a .597 SLG% and an .894 OPS.

FEELING MERRI: Whit Merrifield doubled and walked on Thursday, part of a 1-for-3 afternoon…Extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 10-for-24 (.417) over that stretch with a pair of doubles and a pair of RBI (1.000 OPS). Since May 19th, is hitting .378 (34-for-90) with six doubles, a homer, 10 RBI, and eight walks (.440 OBP, .918 OPS) in 26 games…Over that span, ranks 2nd in the Majors in batting average (1st: Josh Naylor – .391)…On the season, ranks 3rd in the AL in AVG (.308) and 5th in stolen bases (18).

HARD-HITTING FACTS: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled in the 6th and 8th innings on Thursday, finishing the day 2-for-4…Was his 18th multi-hit game of the season…His 74 hits are tied for 6th most in the AL. All three balls put in play yesterday left Guerrero’s bat at more than 107mph, including a 116.2mph missile to left in the 6th frame, his 2nd-hardest hit ball of the season (116.7mph double on April 26 vs. CWS)…Has recorded an AL-leading 122 hard-hit balls (95+ MPH) this season, trailing only Ronald Acuña Jr.’s 132 for the most in MLB.

EXTRA! EXTRA!: Bo Bichette split the gap in right center yesterday, notching his 13th double of the season as part of a 1-for-4 day…Doubled in consecutive games for the 2nd time this season (3G from May 4-6)…Was the 200th extra-base hit of his career, reaching the mark in 463 games, the 2nd-fastest player in franchise history to accomplish the feat (1st: Vernon Wells – 451G). Leads all MLB hitters with 95 hits (2nd: Ronald Acuña Jr. – 92)…His .318 batting average also ranks 1st in the AL (4th in MLB), while he is currently 2nd in total bases (152), 6th in SLG (.508), 7th in OPS (.857), T-8th in home runs (14), T-9th in RBI (44), and T-12th in XBH (28).

GAUS-OME STUFF: Kevin Gausman takes the hill today for his 15th start of the season…His 117 strikeouts lead the AL, trailing only Spencer Strider (127) for the most in MLB. Among AL pitchers, the righty is currently 1st in SO/9 (12.15) and 1st in K rate (33.2%)…Also ranks 2nd in FIP (2.54), 5th in SO/BB (5.32), 5th in innings pitched (86.2), and 11th in ERA (3.12).

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Blue Jays are off on a three-city, nine-day road trip (1-2 so far)…Own a 19-19 road record this season for a .500 win% (7th in the AL)…After this trio of games against the Rangers, will head out for three contests in Miami (38-31). WINS AND LOSSES: Texas dropped the series finale against the Angels last night, 5-3, as team now owns a 1-3 record to open this 7-G, 7-day homestand against LAA (1-3) and TOR (3 G)…last night’s loss makes it consecutive series losses for TEX (also 1-2 at TB, 6/9-11)…it is the 2nd time this season that the Rangers have dropped 2 series in a row (also 1-2 vs. BAL, 4/3-5 and 1-2 at CHC, 4/7-9)…Rangers have dropped 6 of 8 G (beg. 6/7), but are still 7-6 in June and have won 9 of 16, 13 of 21, 16 of 25, 19 of 30, and 24 of last 37 games…TEX has an MLB-best 28-15 (.651) record in last 43 G beg. 4/28, outscoring its opponents 262-173 (+89) over that span…TEX is 34-20 in last 54 G and 38-22 last 60 G beg. 4/9.

  • Bochy has now been ejected 79 times in his managerial career…Semien’s ejection was just the 2nd of his 11-year Major League career (also 6/1/19 vs. HOU w/ OAK, Alan Porter), and Maddux had been ejected just one other time before yesterday (also 5/10/14 vs. BOS, Vic Carapazza).

STREAK SNAPPED: Nathan Eovaldi shouldered the loss last night despite turning in his team-leading 9th quality start of the season (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R-ER, 2 BB, 9 SO, 2 HR, 1 HBP, 105 pitches/67 strikes)…the loss snapped his streak of wins in 8-straight decisions (beg. 4/18), which finishes T6th-longest winning streak in club history and the longest by a Ranger since Martín Pérez from 5/10-7/29/22 (9-0).

CATCHING AS CATCH CAN: With an RBI single in the 3rd inning last night, Jonah Heim now has 47 RBI this season, 3rd-most among Rangers behind Adolis García (55) and Marcus Semien (53)…he is 1 RBI shy of matching his career high (48 in 2022), and his 47 RBI are already T5th-most ever by a Texas catcher before the All-Star break…the last Rangers backstop to drive in so many runs before the break? Iván Rodríguez in 2000 (80).

  • Heim, 2nd place among A.L. catchers on the 1st All-Star Ballot revealed 6/12 with 320,028 votes (BAL’s Rutschman had 460,496), also ranks 3rd in MLB with a 3.54 catcher ERA.

IF I PLAY, WE SCORE: Adolis García notched a single and run-scoring double in his first 2 at-bats yesterday… it marked García’s 375th career game as a Ranger, and his 246 RBI since debuting with the club in 2020 are the 8th-most ever by a player in his first 375 G with the WSH/TEX franchise: 316-Rafael Palmeiro, 312-Álex Rodríguez, 281-Josh Hamilton, 262-Adrián Beltré, 261-Mark Teixeira, 257-Will Clark, 251-Juan González, 246-García.
