PITTSBURGH PIRATES NOTES:
THE PIRATES:..have lost three straight and four of their last five games…Were swept for the third time this season in their previous series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field…Have had four separate winning streaks of at least four games this season, including a season-high seven-game winning streak from 4/17-23…Have a 0.5 game lead in the National League Central over the second-place Brewers coming into today…Are in first place for the first time after 67 games since the 1997 team had a 33-34 record and 1.0 game lead in the division.
RICH ON THE HILL: Rich Hill gets the start tonight in the opener of this series against the Brewers…Hill allowed two runs a season-high 7.0 innings while winning a 14-7 decision in his last start one week ago tonight against the Mets at PNC Park…Hill threw 119 pitches in the game, becoming the first Pirate to throw 119-plus pitches in a games since James McDonald on June 21, 2012 vs. Minnesota (120).
WINNING STARTS HERE: Pittsburgh’s starting rotation has recorded 25 wins this season…That’s tied for the most among all National League teams along with the Dodgers and Cubs.
WEEKEND AT BERNIE’S: Tonight the Pirates begin a three-game series against the Brewers in a nationally broadcast game on Apple TV…It’s the latest the Pirates have played the Brewers for the first time in a season (not counting the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign) since August 29, 1997.
THE GOLD STANDARD: Ke’Bryan Hayes comes into today ranked first among all third basemen in MLB with seven runs prevented according to Baseball Savant…The 26-yearold Hayes, who is also one of just two players in MLB with 10 Outs Above Average regardless of position according to Baseball Savant, ranks first among all third basemen in MLB with a .989 fielding percentage.
YOUNG HAYES: Ke’Bryan Hayes has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games, going 22-for-54 (.407) with three doubles, two triples, two homers, 11 RBI and 1.056 OPS…Since May 31, Hayes’ .407 average ranks third in MLB behind Cleveland’s Josh Naylor (.453) and Los Angeles’ Shohei Ohtani (.439).
CENTRAL PARKED: This is the second of three straight series against teams from the National League Central for the Pirates…Pittsburgh has gone 10-7 within its own division, going 7-0 at PNC Park and 3-7 on the road.
WHAT’S BREWING: Andrew McCutchen has 36 career home runs against the Brewers…That’s the second-most among all active players (Joey Votto leads the way among active players with forty one)…Bryan Reynolds is a .324 career hitter (72-for-222) against the Brew Crew… Pittsburgh went 8-11 against Milwaukee last year, including wins in six of the last eight games.
GETTING ON: Andrew McCutchen has produced a .409 on-base percentage since May 14 when he batted leadoff for the first time this season (he has led off in 18 of those 25 games since)…Since May 14, McCutchen’s .406 OBP ranks ninth in all of MLB… McCutchen is also tied for the seventh-most walks (19) in MLB in that time.
BAE, BAE, BAE: Ji Hwan Bae comes into today ranked fifth among all National League rookies in batting (.272) and on-base percentage (.327)…Since May 19, he is also hitting at a .338 clip (22-for-65) with six doubles, seven RBI and .820 OPS in 19 starts.
STARTING PITCHER – 44 – LHP RICH HILL
RICH HILL: The 43-year-old lefthander is making his 14th start of the season tonight…Allowed two runs in a season-high 7.0 innings while winning a 14-7 decision in his last start last Friday against the Mets at PNC Park.
vs. MILWAUKEE: 3-3 with a 3.84 ERA (58.2ip/25er) in 11 career appearances (10 starts)…Hasn’t faced the Brewers since losing a 2-1 decision (5.0ip/2r) at Milwaukee on 9/25/21 while pitching for the Mets…He also has a 2.05 ERA (26.1ip/6er) in five career appearances (four starts) at American Family Field.
