MLB Preview: Arizona Diamondbacks (38-25) at Detroit Tigers (26-35)

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS NOTES:

BEST IN THE WEST
♦ The D-backs are first place in the NL West and carry the NL’s second-best record, behind the Braves (39-24), as well as MLB’s fifth-best record, behind the Rays (47-19), Rangers (40-22), Orioles (39-24) and Braves (39-24).

TIGERS LOSE SERIES OPENER TO ARIZONA: The Tigers dropped their seventh straight game last night, losing to the Diamondbacks, 11-6. Jake Rogers had three hits, including a pair of solo home runs, while Javier Baez went 2×5 with a solo homer. Kerry Carpenter and Spencer Torkelson each added two hits. Michael Lorenzen started for Detroit and took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

ROSTER MOVES: The Tigers have announced the following roster moves:
*Placed OF Akil Baddoo on the 10-day injured list with a right quad strain
*Recalled INF/OF Nick Solak from Triple A Toledo

RAKE ROGERS: Jake Rogers belted a pair of home runs in last night’s game, hitting solo shots in the seventh and ninth innings. The performance marked Rogers’ first career multi-homer game. He now has eight home runs on the season, which ranks tied for second among American League catchers.

GET SHORTY: Zack Short went 1×3 with two RBI last night against Arizona. Short has now recorded a hit in four straight games and has hit safely in 11 of his last 14 contests, over which he is batting .324/.409/.514 with a double, two home runs and 11 RBI.

MOVIN’ ON UP: Miguel Cabrera enters today’s game within striking distance of Dave Winfield on the MLB all-time hits list. Cabrera begins tonight’s contest with 3,108 hits in his big league career, two away from tying Winfield for 22nd in MLB history. Additionally, Cabrera has 1,136 extra-base hits in his career, two shy of tying Ty Cobb (1,138) for 15th in big league history.

TIGERS AND DIAMONDBACKS: The Tigers and Diamondbacks continue their only series of the season today. The two teams met last season in Arizona with Detroit winning two-of-three games. The Diamondbacks lead the all-time series 21-17, including a 10-8 edge at Comerica Park.
