MLB Preview: Cleveland Guardians (13-15) at New York Yankees (15-14)

CLEVELAND GUARDIANS NOTES:

GUARDS FALL IN RUBBER MATCH AGAINST BOSTON
The Guardians snapped a 3-game win streak in series finales, falling to the Boston Red Sox by a 7-1 margin on a soggy Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park…Cleveland has dropped 2 of 3 in four consecutive series, as club comes to Yankee Stadium seeking first series victory overall since April 14-16 at Washington.

Rookie southpaw LOGAN ALLEN put forth another admirable outing (5.0IP, 4H, 2R-ER, 2BB, 8SO, 104 pitches), though the pair of runs allowed in the 5th would prove to be enough for the Red Sox; Allen recorded 4.0 scoreless frames to start the day and struck out the side in the 4th before allowing a lead-off single and bloop ground-rule double to start the 5th, setting the table for Alex Verdugo’s 2-run single…Verdugo added a solo homer off PEYTON BATTENFIELD to lead-off a 3-run 7th that also saw Christian Arroyo capitalize on back-to-back walks with a 2-run double…Connor Wong lifted a NICK SANDLIN offering over the Green Monster for a 2-run homer in the 6th…STEVEN KWAN scored Cleveland’s lone run on AMED ROSARIO’s RBI-single in the 6th after reaching on a lead-off double…Chris Sale pitched into the 7th inning of his second win for the BoSox (6.1IP, 3H, 1R-ER, 0BB, 5SO, HB, 98 pitches).

The Clevelanders are 9-7 on the road but have still dropped 9 of their last 13 overall following a 9-6 start to the season…Guardians (13-15) hold sole possession of 2nd place in AL Central standings, 3.5 games behind Minnesota (17-12)…last season, club went 9-12 in April and 12-12 in May.

GETTING WARMED UP
After falling to the Red Sox on Sunday, Cleveland finished with a 12-14 record in April…during the TERRY FRANCONA Era (since 2013) the Guardians have had a winning record only 3 times in April, going 15-10 in 2019, 14-11 in 2018, and 14-10 in 2017…the club finished 9-12 in 022, 12-12 in 2021, 10-11 in 2016, 7-14 in 2015, 10-17 in 2014 and 11-13 in 2013.

LOGAN’S LEGENDARY START
In his first career start on the road, LOGAN ALLEN threw 5.0 innings, allowing 2 R/ER with 8 strikeouts…after 8 punchouts in his Major League debut on April 23 vs. Miami, he is now the second player in Cleveland history to strikeout 8-or-more batters in each of his first 2 career starts and the first since Herb Score struck out 9 batters in each of his first 2 career starts in 1955…only 15 other players have ever accomplished the feat with TB’s Taj Bradley also achieving it this season (8SO on 4/12 and 9SO on 4/18).

Allen is now the 7th pitcher in MLB history with 8-or-more strikeouts and 2-or-fewer earned runs in each of his first 2 career starts and the first since Dinelson Lamet in 2017 while he was with the Padres…the rookie left-hander is the only Cleveland pitcher with multiple games of 8-or-more strikeouts this season.

STOP HITTING ME
ANDRÉS GIMÉNEZ was hit by a pitch for the 5th time this season yesterday, ranking T4th in the AL and MLB…since the start of last season Giménez has been plunked 30 times, tied for MLB lead with NYM’s Mark Canha…after being hit 25 times in 2022, he holds the single-season franchise record ahead of Ryan Garko who was hit 20 times in 2007.

LAST TIME OUT
He last toed the rubber on April 24, getting tagged with the loss in a 6-0 defeat vs. Colorado after allowing 8 hits and 5 runs (earned) in 3.1 innings while tallying a pair of strikeouts and walks…it marked his second loss in as many home starts this season, bringing his career home record down to 20-5 after entering 2023 with a 20-3 record…he faced trouble almost immediately as the second batter of the game, Jurickson Profar, hit a solo home run to right field to put the Rockies ahead 1-0…after allowing a hit in the 2nd and 3rd innings, Quantrill failed to get out of the 4th…after two singles and a walk, Ezequiel Tovar roped a 2-RBI single to make it 3-0…after another walk, Profar struck again with the second 2-RBI single of the inning, ending Quantrill’s day with Colorado ahead 5-0.

NEW YORK NEMESIS
Is 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA (4ER/10.2IP) in 4 career regular season appearances (1 start) vs. New York-AL…Quantrill did not factor into the decision in his last regular season start against New York-AL on April 23, 2022 (ND, 6.1IP, 3R/ER, 3BB, 2SO), which was his first career start at Yankee Stadium, as the Guards fell 5-4…Quantrill has also faced the Yankees three times in the Postseason, most recently losing two starts in the 2022 ALDS in G1 (L, 5.0IP, 4H, 4R/3ER, 3BB, 5SO) and G4 at Progressive Field (L, 4H, 3R/ER, 1BB, 3SO).

CAN ONLY MAKE ME STRONGER

RECENT ROAD WARRIOR
Since starting 2022 with a 1-5 record in his first 7 road tilts, Quantrill has turned things around and won 6 consecutive decisions across his last 9 starts away from home…since July 22, 2022, Quantrill holds an unblemished 6-0 record with a 2.77 ERA (16ER/52.0IP), along with 42 strikeouts and 13 walks in his road starts during that span…he has received 4-or-more runs of support in 6 of those 9 starts…Quantrill has had an 8.13 RSA on the road since July 22, 2022, leading all MLB pitchers with 8-or-more road starts during that timeframe.

CRAFTY CAL
Through his first five starts, Quantrill has relied heavily on his sinker as he has thrown it for over half of his pitches this season… he has evenly distributed his sinker against righties and lefties this season, throwing 125 of them to right-handers and 118 to left-handers…hitters have not missed on much of his arsenal this season as each of his offerings has a .250 or better batting average against.
