MLS Preview: FC Dallas (4-3-2) at Minnesota United FC (3-3-2)

Minnesota United FC got a measure of revenge on the opening day of this season with a 1-0 win over FC Dallas after being eliminated by them on penalties in the 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs. FC Dallas won its last visit to Minnesota, 3-0, last September, after losing each of its previous four trips to St. Paul, Minnesota.

Minnesota United FC has lost three straight games after going unbeaten in its first five this season (W3 D2). This is the second time that Minnesota United FC has followed up a five-match unbeaten start to a season with three straight losses (also in 2020), something no other team has done in the post-shootout era (since 2000).

FC Dallas’ three-match unbeaten run came to an end with a 3-1 loss to New York City FC on Saturday. FC Dallas Dallas hasn’t lost consecutive regular season matches since late May last year, though the second of those two defeats came at the hands of Minnesota United FC.

Minnesota United FC has been outshot by 34 this season (84 attempts, 118 faced), but the quality of those shots have been vastly different. The Loons’ 84 shots have a higher combined expected goals value (9.46) than the 118 shots they’ve faced (9.31) this season.

jesus Ferreira came off the bench to provide an assist in FC Dallas’ defeat at New York City FC on Saturday. Since the start of the 2021 season FC Dallas has won just one of the 14 regular season matches in which Ferreira did not start (D6 L7).
