LOS ANGELES DODGERS NOTES:
ACTION AT THE RAVINE: The Dodgers dropped their final game of the road trip yesterday afternoon in Pittsburgh, mustering just five singles and falling to the Pirates, 6-2. Dodger lefty Julio Urías dropped the decision in his third consecutive start for the first time in his career, as he gave up six runs and seven hits in 5.2 innings. Jason Heyward went 2-for-3 with a run scored and collected his second multi-hit game for the Dodgers, who still finished the seven-game run with a winning record (4-3). Los Angeles begins play tonight in second place in the NL West, 1.0 game behind Arizona. Following the weekend series with St. Louis, the Dodgers will welcome in former shortstop Trea Turner and the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game series to round out the homestand from Monday-Wednesday next week. After an off day on Thursday, Los Angeles begins a six-game road trip with the first of three vs. the San Diego Padres at Petco Park next Friday night. The Dodgers 13-13 mark through 26 games is their worst since coming in at 12-14 after the first 26 contests of the 2018 campaign. The club won the NL pennant that season. Los Angeles took two of three in both of their series with St. Louis last year and are now 8-5 against the Cards the last two seasons, including a 4-2 mark at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers allowed 13 stolen bases in the three-game series with Pittsburgh, as the Bucs fell one bag short of matching the record for the most steals vs. the Dodgers in a three-game series, which was 14 by the Boston Doves (Sept. 28-30, 1908.)
The Dodgers have had more steals attempted against them than any other team in baseball (44) and the club has yielded 38 stolen bases, 10 more than the next ML squad (Padres, 28).
BIG RED: Dodger right-hander Dustin May will take the mound for his sixth start tonight, equaling the number of starts he made in 2022. May will also toe the rubber against the Cardinals for just the second time in his career, following a start on Aug. 7, 2019 at Dodger Stadium (5.2 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 7 K). With a victory this evening, May would match his career high in wins with three. The native of Texas also won three games in 2020. Among qualified pitchers, May ranks fifth in WHIP (0.92), third in opponent’s batting average (.167) and third in opponents’ OPS (.499). This Monday, May 1, the first 40,000 fans in attendance will receive a Dustin May bobblehead, presented by Security Benefit.
APPLE OF OUR EYE: Rookie James Outman went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts yesterday, marking the first time in his young career he has fanned four times in a game. He has still hit safely in seven of his last 10 games and is batting .317 (13-for-41) with four doubles, four homers and nine RBI during that span. Outman currently leads all rookies in homers (7), RBI (19), slugging (.644), OPS (1.011), triples (3), extra-base hits (14), total bases (56) and he is tied for second in runs (15) with Josh Jung and Ji Hwan Bae., trailing just Corbin Carroll (17). Outman’s seven homers this month are the most by a Dodger Rookie since Will Smith clubbed eight homers in August of 2019. Last Saturday, Outman became the first Dodger rookie ever to club 6+ homers in March/April, passing Alex Guerrero and Joe Ferguson for the all-time mark in those two months. He is currently tied for 8th all-time in homers in a month by a rookie – Cody Bellinger holds the all-time mark with 13 in the month of June (2017).
Most Rookie Homers – March/April
2022 James Outman 7
2015 Alex Guerrero 5
1973 Joe Ferguson 5
Tonight, Outman will be featured on the Dodgers’ Apple TV Broadcast as he will wear a mic for the home squad as the Dodgers make their 2023 debut on the telecast.
LONG BALLS: The Dodgers failed to homer yesterday, marking just the fifth time in 26 games the club hasn’t gone deep. Los Angeles has hit 45 homers on the season and trails only Tampa Bay (51) for the Major League lead. The Dodgers have recorded 3+ homers in nine games this season, which is tied with the Rays for the big league lead. The Dodgers are second in the League with 21 games with at least one homer, behind the Rays (23), who have homered in all but three games this season.
