Red Sox place INF Yu Chang on paternity list

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today placed infielder Yu Chang on the Paternity List. To fill Chang’s spot on the active Major League roster, the club recalled infielder/outfielder Enmanuel Valdez from Triple-A Worcester. Valdez will wear number 47.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Chang, 27, has played in 12 games with the Red Sox this season, making six starts at shortstop and two at second base. In Saturday’s win against the Los Angeles Angels, he went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, turning a 7-6 deficit into an 8-7 lead with a two-run single in the eighth inning. On the season, Chang is 2-for-26 (.077). He has played in 208 Major League games, third most among players born in Taiwan behind Wei-Yin Chen (219) and Hung-Chih Kuo (218).

Valdez, 24, is ranked as a top 20 Red Sox prospect by both MLB.com (No. 17) and Baseball America (No. 19). In 11 games with Worcester this season, the left-handed hitter has gone 7-for-39 (.179) with three doubles, one home run, and six walks, while making 11 starts at second base. Acquired from the Houston Astros on August 1, 2022, Valdez recorded at least 25 home runs and 90 RBI in both 2021 and 2022. In his minor league career, he has appeared at every defensive position other than center field and pitcher.
