LOS ANGELES DODGERS NOTES:

THANK YOU, KERSH: The Dodgers, backed by future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw, blanked the Mets, 5-0, recording their first shutout victory of the 2023 campaign. Kershaw fired 7.0 scoreless innings and notched career-win No. 200, while designated hitter J.D. Martinez had a monster night at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two homers and four RBI. This afternoon, with a first pitch scheduled for 12:10 p.m., the Boys in Blue will take on the Mets in the rubber match of the three-game series which also concludes their sixgame homestand (2-3). Following the game today, the club will fly to Chicago and begin an eight-day, seven-game road trip against the Cubs (4) and Pirates (3), beginning with a 4:40 p.m. PT start tomorrow evening at Wrigley Field. J.D. Martinez belted two home runs last night, his 19th-career multi-homer contest and first of 2023. Martinez also matched a career high with four hits for the 15th time in his 13 seasons in the big leagues. The Miami, FL native is tied with Jorge Soler and Matt Olson for the most extra-base hits in the National League with 12. The Dodgers lost their season series with the Mets last year, splitting four games at Dodger Stadium and losing two of three at Citi Field. Los Angeles lost just two series after the All-Star break last season, falling to the Mets on the road and Washington at Dodger Stadium. 2022 marked the first time the Dodgers lost a season series to the Mets since 2015, but Los Angeles has now dropped five of its last seven vs. New York. The Mets have not won a series at Dodger Stadium since taking two of three from Sept. 3-5, 2018.

HISTORIC NIGHT INDEED: Last night, Dodger left-hander Clayton Kershaw became just the third pitcher in Major League history to amass 200 wins with the Dodger franchise, joining Don Sutton (233) and Don Drysdale (209). With the victory, he becomes the winningest pitcher in the 200 club:

Highest Win Pct. -All-Time (min. 200 Wins)
Clayton Kershaw .694 2008-current
Whitey Ford .690 1950-67
Bob Caruthers .688 1885-91
Pedro Martinez .687 1992-2009
Lefty Grove .680 1925-41

Kershaw’s nine strikeouts gave him 2,833 in his career and he blew past Mickey Lolich for sole possession of 22nd on the all-time strikeout leaderboard. No. 22 now needs 22 more punchouts to catch Hall of Famer and former Dodger Jim Bunning for 21st all-time. Bunning, the nine-time AllStar for the Tigers and Phillies, was traded by the Pirates to the Dodgers on Aug. 15, 1969 and made nine starts for Los Angeles.

HOME RUNS TO THE MAX: Dodger third baseman Max Muncy went 1-for-1 with a Dodger season-high tying three walks last night. Muncy’s seven home runs are tied with Rafael Devers for third in the Major Leagues, trailing just Patrick Wisdom (8) and Pete Alonso (8). Muncy’s 15 RBI are tied for fifth in the NL, trailing just Matt Olson (20), Bryan Reynolds (17), Francisco Lindor (17) and Alec Bohm (16). Since April 10, Muncy leads the Major Leagues with six home runs, 13 RBI and a 1.620 OPS. In eight games since then, he’s hitting .400 (10-for-25).

THOR VS. MAD MAX: Dodger right-hander Noah Syndergaard takes the mound this afternoon for his fourth start as a Dodger and first-ever career outing vs. the New York Mets, the team he broke into the big leagues with and pitched for from 2015-21. His opponent, Max Scherzer, went 7-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 11 starts for the Dodgers in 2021 after coming over in a trade-deadline move along with Trea Turner.

DIGGING THE LONGBALL: The Dodgers belted two more home runs last night, thanks to the efforts of designated hitter J.D. Martinez, who went deep in his first two plate appearances vs. Tylor Megill. The Dodgers continue to lead the National League with 32 home runs, trailing only the Tampa Bay Rays (41) for the most in the Majors. The club has recorded six 3+ homer games this season and also lead the NL with a .464 slugging percentage, 64 extra-base hits (T-1st) and six triples (T-1st, ML). The club ranks second on the Senior Circuit with 96 runs scored and an .801 OPS.
