AFTERNOON BUMMER IN THE BRONX: The Twins lost to the Yankees yesterday afternoon by a score of 6-1 in game three of four at Yankee Stadium…Tyler Mahle (1-2) was the starter and loser, allowing four runs (2 earned) on four hits in 4.1 innings pitched, with three walks and five strikeouts, including home runs by Kyle Higashioka and Anthony Rizzo…the offense recorded just five hits, two going for extra bases as the Twins got back-to-back doubles from Trevor Larnach and Jose Miranda in the seventh, proving to be the only run for the Twins.
USE YOUR HEAD: The Twins have recalled left-handed pitcher Brent Headrick from Triple-A St. Paul…Headrick, 25, has appeared in two games (1 start) for the Saints this season, allowing six runs on 12 hits in 9.0 innings pitched, with two walks and 12 strikeouts…the 6-foot-6, 238-pound lefty has pitched in parts of four minor league seasons in the Twins organization, going 13-10, 3.52 ERA (184.0 IP, 72 ER), 67 walks, 238 strikeouts, a 1.29 WHIP and a 11.6 strikeouts-per-9.0 innings pitched ratio in 46 games (41 starts)…the Braidwood, Illinois native was selected by the Twins in the ninth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Illinois State University…to make room for Headrick on the 26-man roster, the Twins have optioned right-handed pitcher Louie Varland to Triple-A St. Paul…Varland made the start for the Twins on Friday night at Yankee Stadium and took a no-decision, allowing three runs on six hits in 6.0 innings pitched, with one walk and eight strikeouts in a Twins 4-3 victory.
